Running 2 Amps

My first Mcintosh purchase consisted of a 7270 amp and a C28 pre which make the B&W 808's sound very good. Not excellent though because of the Power Guard system seems to activate too easily, at A volume that should be much louder for the speakers I'm running.
Last night we tried utilizing the bi- amp setup with the Mac pushing the mids and highs and a Pioneer Spec 4
for the Bass. Results were not as I expected. Plenty of volume but not even close to how it sounded before.
I 'd like to try 1 Amp per side (L & R) even though the Mac has 2 X the watts as the Spec, but not quite sure
how it's done.

Hmmm ... to which taps are your B&W speakers connected? And, since the MC7270 can’t be driven to clipping this may be way louder than you realize. You’re out of amplifier when the PG lamps are flashing 20% of the time ...

Leave the room with the system cranked, go to the bathroom, and when you return you’ll have a feel for just how loud it actually is. I get it, I have three pair of Mc amps larger than the 7270 ...

Did you gain match the Mc and Pioneer for this bi-amp experiment so that the woofers were in the correct balance relative to the mid / highs?
