SA-8800 vs SX-980

I already have an SA-8800 and was thinking about adding an SX-980 to my collection, but im wondering if these two are so similar that it would be redundant.

I also have an SX-750 that I love the sound of, while the SA-8800 is somewhat "sterile" compared to the 750. Is the 980 a compromise between the 750 and 8800?

I wouldn't say that. They are very different designs. The SA-8800 could possibly benefit from a thorough Deoxit-ing and adjustment of idle current and DC balance. You will need the service manual (downloadable from the Pioneer manuals section) and a good DMM. See page 19 of the service manual.

Definitely read Echowar's fantastic Sticky "Amplifier Distortion, DC-Offset, and You!" in Vintage Solid State if you aren't a Tech (and if you are, you will enjoy it anyway).

Once attended to, the 8800 should sound anything but sterile. I would describe mine as detailed but very airy and open, but that's just my take.
Pioneer used some sort of "non-switching circuitry" in the 9800 and 8800 that is theoretically similar to Class A (at least if their brochure is accurate)

If the sound of the "50" series is your favorite, perhaps an SX-1050 would be a really nice addition? It is way up the ladder from the 750 build-wise, and has a pretty great FM section (if that matters). Just a thought ; )
