Sad Post On "Oldies" Radio

You mean The Mighty Ripple am radio. That station was awesome!! Calvin was also on WROQ initially in the early seventies. Sounded like the same person. I always assumed it was.

and thank you for that link Todd Dodds. Turns out it was not Calvin I remembered from Beaker Street. It was Clyde Stifford. And I'll tell you this for truth.....he turned me into the music fan I am. When all my friends were listening to the Archies and 1910 Fruitgum Company I was rocking to Led Zep, Janis, Dylan, Jimi, and The Moody Blues. I'll always remember him for that. And with radio being what it is now I don't think we'll ever see the likes of Clyde or Calvin again.

R.I.P. Mr Walker

After just a bit of looking it appears that it was Clyde Stifford on Beaker Street....not Calvin. Sounded very much alike. Both were, I think, men from another time and space.

I miss a true Oldies format also. I really miss XM's 50s on 5. When Sirius took it over and ruined it, and canned all the good DJs and program directors, I dumped my subscription--they got into the same style of Clear-Channel-ized rut of the same old songs all the time. XM's version killed, back in the day. 60s on 6 is another--I liked quite a few things they used to play that were overlooked by terrestrial radio.

Here in Nebraska the typical "classic rock" from the 70's and 80's has been played to death. Every where ya go it seems like it's played. Every time I hear ACDC, Metallica or Aerosmith I almost would rather stick my head in a blender.
That's the truth! Our "classic rock" fiasco in town has been playing the same tired shtick for decades now, except now we also have to endure Bon effing Jovi along with Eagles, Aerosmith and Seger regurgitated 24/7. I personally won't tune into it, but the occasional store will have it playing somewhere. It's like a freakin' time capsule.

Don't even get me started on our local "Oldies" stations that think all we want to hear around here is 60s Motown...

90's :dunno: ... for me it was the sixth generation <link ... when it started to go downhill. I remember attending a Hank Williams JR concert in the late 80's in North Carolina .. change was coming .. that was more like a rock concert vice country .. still a hell of show though but I like Country & Rock.

I guess I should rephrase what I said, or at the very least, explain it. There was still some quality country coming out in the 90's, but the older artists were shoved aside. I remember great albums from George Jones and Waylon Jennings which received little or no airplay. Even Neil Diamond put out an excellent country album all to be ignored.

interesting take on the rock/country thing...since our corporate masters no longer produce, give contracts to etc, rock and roll bands in favor of T-bop for the 13-30 girl market, I have heard 3 performers in the last year say the same thing, blake shelton, T-Roy Gentry and Vince Gill all said that the guitarists who want to play that style are heading to touring musicians for country bands...

Our oldies station just got ....less oldies and more 70s and 80s "oldies" at the first of the year. Womc 104.3 FM. I don't listen to a ton of oldies but when I want it......the breakfast club theme or Janie's got a gun is not what I call oldies! Thank God for you tube .

There's an independent station out of Memphis, 103.9, (Sunny something or another) that's just out of my reach here. I've heard it a few times in the car; they have a pretty eclectic playlist. I've heard doo-wop, Christmas, classic country, Elvis, Ferlin Husky, 50's rock, etc. I wish there were more stations like it!

Yes, IMHO some good quality comes out in every era but at some point you just reach a bridge too far. For example .. Buck Owens probably felt that in the 1980's. For others, it may well have been the 90's. For me, it was the sixth generation or 2000's to present. I liked everything before ... not so much after ... some exceptions now & then.
