SAE 1000LT/E blowout sale on the bay

I have no idea why you quoted my post about phono stages.

The SAEs are not my first moving coil cartridges. I am currently running three others on my three tables. They are, in the order purchased: Denon DL-301 MkII, Dynavector 20x2L and Koetsu Black. I acknowledge there are better cartridges available, but most would consider these (at least the Dynavector and Koetsu) a tier, or two, above the SAEs.

So, why did I purchase the budget priced SAE HOMC cartridges? First, I love a bargain, always have, always will. Second, I like to hear what different cartridges sound like in my systems. Third, and the most practical reason, my LOMC cartridges will soon need to be retipped and the SAEs will give me something to listen to when my Dynavector and Koetsu are sent off to a retipper. I spin records every day and wouldn't want any downtime waiting for one of my LOMC cartridges to be returned. To me, this hobby is all about the fun/enjoyment/pleasure I receive from listening to music and these inexpensive SAE cartridges give me a way to enjoy my music during that downtime.

Neither of the two I received (one each 1000LT and 1000E) have any corrosion on the pins or the cantilevers, nor have I commented on these issues.

Finally, I never even mentioned you, let alone asked you to change how you post.

So, nothing you wrote applies to me, or the post by me that you quoted. I never "called you out" in this, or any other thread. Quite the opposite. I have enjoyed your posts and the journey you have shared here over the years. I like reading about the different equipment you have tried and what you thought about it. Your posts on the Rega integrated amplifiers got me interested in them and I am now running them in two of my systems (a Brio in my office system and and an Elex-R in the main system). So, please continue posting exactly as you always have. You don't need my permission to do so, but you have it nonetheless.

My first post never quoted you in a response. I went back and checked. I have no idea what your wanting to convey except for apparently some unhappiness. But no responses were addressed to you except this one, which is why you see the quote above. The first post I made had no quotes. Please take a look at it again to confirm.

EDIT

I just scrolled through the rest of my posts I see that one. It wasn't meant to be a response to you...I am posting on a cell phone as the power supply of my laptop just died. Somehow I got a response to a wrong post. My apologies. It was meant for a previous poster. I will fix it if I can but I am now at work.

I don't take kindly to those who sniff at posters, any posters at any level, with a condescending tone. I'll clap back when needed, and then at some point I invoke the ignore function. I don't like to use it because it impacts the flow of threads during read-through, but for the first time in a year or so, after it has become clear that someone is entertaining themselves trolling others on AK, they're now on ignore.

Not all barnyard animals are kind or intelligent.
Why not just let it go?

So.....the Japanese DSOTM showed up today. Holiday party tonight will derail my playing with audio stuff this evening. But tomorrow should be fun (and hopefully not frustrating).

Art, no problem. I was confused by your response, since it did not seem to address my comments. Accidents happen, and this is a very minor one. No harm, no foul.

I have some Brahms on a delightful London FFrr label. Never noticed the very nice layering of instruments. This cart is the the best in my Plebe / Hay seed world with Mid- Fi TT.

It sounds like this bargain of the decade has made people miserable .
Look, there’s no such thing as the best cartridge ever, once you get above the $100-$200, they’re all like great looking women , which is the best looking is personal taste.
I took a break from listening to my 1000lt, currently spinning old Simon /Garfunkel records on my 50 year old pioneer pl41 with equally old plc9 cart. I’m sure there are some that will sneer that’s old crap equipment , if a tt doesn’t have exposed rubber bands, cost $10k with a $5k mc cart that uses unicorn tusk for stylus, it’s all crap.
I think they miss the point, just enjoy the stuff you have , be grateful you have it. I like different carts because it’s almost like listening to an album for the first time when you switch.
Tonight, I’ll listen to “Night Fly “ with the 1000lt and try to determine if I should have the loading on my cheap ass tcc760 phono preamp set at 20 or 100.

I mentioned in another thread, I'm seriously thinking about sending an extra E I got to Joseph and re-tipping it.
Maybe like a line contact or micro ridge.

I haven't really listened to my LT much.
To those who have both, is the LT better?

I don't know how some can take something good and turn it into something shitty.
Takes skill I guess.

This is where it’s handy to have a wife hit you over the head.
Regardless of tip, it’s a very, very good cartridge. It has a very nice elliptical tip, brand new. Why not put some use on it? Disclosure- I’m one of those who believes that no tip is better than another , I have all types in my stable and yes, I do love my conical types as much as my shibata/line trace types.

Hey @theflattire, this has been debated on the thread to some extent but I would say not necessarily one "better" than the other, but certainly different to some extent. Although, as others have mentioned, I also agree that there are many similarities as well and now, thanks to @Blewpernt enlightening post, can understand better why this may be so. What it really comes down to is do you like what you hear with the elliptical stylus or the line trace? To some extent, I'm given to suggest it may also be the type of music being played. It would be difficult for me, given the choice to have only one, to leave the other on the table.....

PS - But I'd probably keep the elliptical because I only have one of those and 3 of the line trace:D

Just received my last two "E's" ordered just before seller sold out.

Both carts are sans corrosion on either the pins or the cantilever. Quick test with a multi-meter showed roughly 104Ω on each coil, so no dead channels seen yet.

I have a multimeter, but I'm kind of a n00b with it. What's the procedure to to measure the ohm on each coil @dogwan ?

I think the E sounds great. Fuller than my OC9XSL. I haven't really put much time on it though, maybe 10-20 hours.
Sort of just wondering what it would sound like with something different.
Maybe I do need a wake up slap!

I would just forego the slap  and mount your LT after listening to the E for another 20-30 hours. Even though many report them sounding great from the gitgo, more play-time will allow for more of the potential to possibly be revealed. Then go back and listen to some of the same music with the LT that you heard with the E and see what you think. Hey, listening is fun, eh? Play on amigo!

It’s been done and hasn’t worked for years. It really is too bad that this kind of stuff has to go on. But it does go on and this won’t stop it.

Just to dispel some rumors, this SAE at its heart is the same generator as that in what has come to be a long and continuing line of highly respected phono cartridges.

It may have first seen the light of day in some Coral models like the highly respected MC-8. At some point there was the John Marovskis MIT-1 which is said to be the first cartridge on the market to feature the van den Hul diamond.

The ADCOM and the SAE stick to high output and aluminum cantilevers and if you want to know why, you can find an entire treatise on its conception, design and execution over at Vinyl Engine. Brilliant marketing or engineering fact, the authors believed at the time that they were making the very best magnetic cartridge generator that money could buy and it didn’t go unnoticed.

None other than the very discriminating AJ van den Hul himself allowed for his diamond to be installed on the ADCOM as the XC/vdH, only after declaring that it was the only generator worthy of his diamond (obviously this was before he came out with his own brand of cartridges) and it was the “must have” cartridge for a good while.

Coral then put out the Coral 777 and about the same time, Jim Bongiorno introduced the GAS Sleeping Beauty to the world. These are the very same generators as the ADCOM and SAE with very obvious cosmetic changes. Jim decided to add the fancy beryllium cantilever and Shibata diamonds and it seemed the world could not get enough of the cartridge and the reviewers loved it as well.

At some time Sumiko had basically run its course with the David Fletcher patented ring magnet design, executed by Transfigurstion, and moved to this generator. It started, I guess with the rare LMX series that pretty much look just like the Corals. But in the early 1990s it took a wild turn and at $60 Sumiko introduced the Universal Blue Point P Mount which took the world by storm as much for its sound and performance as its price. The generator has since appeared in all Sumiko MC cartridges since, high and low output, and with a rapid elevation in pricing following trends to price moving coil cartridges higher for no reason other than to capitalize on the cache.

You will find this generator, albeit low output with basically a Denon DL-103 coil frame and windings, today on pricey cartridges including multi-thousand dollar cartridges such as the Sumiko Celebration 40 and the $5,000 Palo Santos.

It is also found as we know in the Hana cartridges, the Benz Micro MC Silver and Gold, and some others.

There is no cartridge that is the end all be all in MC, but this SAE cartridge in my opinion deserves the respect it’s receiving from those who have been lucky enough to grab it for $100 and enjoy it and express appreciation for it without the derisive comments that there are better cartridges out there. In fact, some of the better cartridges out there are the same damned cartridge, if you knew your history and know how to connect dots.

What I find really amusing is that you and your old thread-crapping buddy 4-2-7 used to regularly tag team any appreciative thread about what you two considered to be “low end” cartridges. 4-2-7 had outright passionate contempt for any moving magnet cartridge and unrestrained expressions of loathing for anyone who had a good thing to say about them. In the process, he violated so many forum rules regarding demeanor and it was certainly an improvement in atmosphere for many when he got booted.

What’s ironic to me is that you and he regularly dive bombed threads like this one while he brandished his customized Sumiko BlackBird with a SoundSmith ruby cantilever and optimized contour contact line stylus—which sports the very same generator as these SAE cartridges that you are working so hard to point out as “lower tier” transducers.

Don’t you think that’s kind of funny?

I always thought it was kind of sad that 4-2-7 worked so hard to fall under your shadow in the hopes to be considered in the same league as you when there was no way you’d actually consider him to be at your level, whatever level that is. I was always expecting you to say something like, “Well, you know, Dan, those cartridges and turntables you have are actually rather pedestrian and boring compared to what I have. That you hold them in such high regard reveals you to be somewhat of a rube, and even a simple tube at that!” But you never did because he supported you.

You and some nice stuff, for sure. I don’t know why any of that is relevant in a thread like this though. Why your opinions of where it falls in the continuum of cartridge quality or desirability matters is anyone’s guess and why you need to come in and express those positions to a crowd that you know doesn’t want to hear it is also puzzling since it doesn’t actually promote the topic. Except your motivations are quite transparent.

Trolls like you are everywhere in every forum, from cars to cameras to vacuum cleaners and they always behave just like you do.

The SAE is a fantastic proven design that has been around for decades with few changes. It is affordable as a technology because it is more or less mass produced, but to exacting standards and extremely high quality. There are boutique manufacturers of extremely expensive cartridges that do not perform nearly as well and which show comparatively poor build quality and even atrocious build quality. There are boutique manufacturers who take similarly proven motors and dress them up a little bit with some fancy finish work and materials and charge tens of thousands of dollars.

This is a tradition started, I think, perhaps by Sugano San, who took a very nice Supex, and added a low compliance suspension. That’s it. He took a Supex SD900 Rosewood and made it low compliance. He added his own aluminum belly cover, a ton of Asian flare marketing mystique, called it the Koetsu Rosewood and the megabuck boutique art cartridge was born.

The SAE should be appreciated for being an honest no BS cartridge, that is very well designed and does what it’s set out to do which is to perform to a very high standard and sound fantastic, because that’s what it does.

I found that some $16,000 cartridges I auditioned failed to do that, which is at least as relevant as your points, but again, so what?

Did you perhaps quote the wrong person? I'm fairly certain 4-2-7 didn't like me much, judging by his constant reminders that I was on his ignore list.

I thought you were saying that I should have written what I wrote directly to Mister Pig in a DM. If not, my bad.

You got that right - I absolutely did. It seems that aside from the first line the entirety of that response is directed at someone else though I was the one quoted. 4-2-7 and I didn't tag team jack.

Set your meter to ohms (resistance) and attach probes to each channel's pins to measure.

Edit: in case it's not obvious, do this while cartridge is not connected to tonearm.

Red and green (+ and -) are right channel.
White and blue (+ and -) are left channel.
Doesn't really matter direction of probes for this measurement.

Easier if you have mini-grabber probes to hold on the the pins. Or a 3rd hand holder if you only have the pointy probes.
