SAE A301 Power Amp

I picked up a neat SAE A301 power amp. It has an interesting chassis with the side panels and top cover being load bearing and made of thick aluminum plate. There is no internal chassis or frame. The A301 makes 175 wpc and features a toroid and what appears to be 8 outputs per channel. There is no power on/off switch.

My example plays but will need a minor service to cure distortion in the left channel. I'm looking forward to playing the A301 loud as it looks like it can handle it.

Nice catch. I have several A301s and have found them to be real workhorses. Very reliable and good sounding. Enjoy!

That's right. The A201 and A301 lacked power switches, and were expected to be plugged into the pre-amp power outlets. Their bigger brothers, the A501 and A1001, had their own power switches.

I use mine with the Adcom 515 power distribution switch, that powers up the pre-amp, source etc. first and then 10 seconds later routes power to the amp.

Although I am knowledgeable in a few areas I have learned never to post an absolute. And yes it is factory. Just busting your chops since you should know where this came from.

Jerrymrc,

You're right, SAE did produce some A301s and X-15s with power switches that were destined for the European market. I believe there is/was some regulation there that required them to be switchable. The standard domestic models didn't have power switches, and since that was what SoCal Sam evidently had, I didn't think it was worth cluttering the discussion. But, you're right, some did have power switches.

I think I would rather have the power switch...

Was this unit made in Los Angeles?

Pacific Stereo sold some A301's with a power switch on the front. Those were the only ones I had ever seen with a PS.
I have a P101 & a A301 driving a pair of AR-3a speakers. The sound is just fantastic. This combo can handle anything you can throw at it. SAE amps are also very quiet too.
No backround hiss or anything like that.
