Sansui 771

I have a Sansui 771 that plays like a champ. However, when the receiver is turned on, a very faint popping sound is sometimes intermittently heard.I took the receiver in to a local tech to diagnosis the problem, but the pop did not happen while he had the unit.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and, if so, what was the fix?

That could be a lot of things. For a simple fix you could try unseating the amp board and cleaning the contacts with deoxit. I've seen that fix similar issues. Other than that you'll need to dive a bit deeper.

Hi, does it just occur for a few seconds after powering on or can it happen anytime?
The pop does not occur every time, but when it does occur, it occurs almost instantaneously with the pressing in of the power button. The pop is audible even with the volume control set at zero, and can be heard even when the speakers are not hooked up.

Aah, that narrows things down a fair amount. Can you ascertain in roughly what area the noise is coming from. You do say popping but could it be an arcing type noise coming from the power switch? Do the lights flicker or any other strange behaviour when this noise occurs?

No flicker of the lights, and I really cannot localize the origin of the sound. I will pull the case this weekend and see if the origin of the sound correlates with anything visible.

In thinking about it, and with the speakers unconnected, the pop may actually sound more like a “click”. Does that suggest anything? I can live with the problem, except I don’t want to blows the speakers if there is something really wrong.

If it's a click it is probably the protection relay and is quite normal. It normally engages about 3-5 seconds after powering on, however you would hear this relay every time.

It looks like a small rectangular box with a clear plastic outer case.

Thanks for the info! Is there any reason why the sound, however described, would get louder over time?

Your welcome. I really don't know why the sound would get louder over time, if it is in fact the relay they normally stay the same, but who knows maybe the little internal springs in the relay have lost some tension causing changes to engagement.
