Sansui 9090DB how much $$ if not working

There is a system for sale near me which includes a Sansui 9090DB which apparently has the protection circuit lights come on when powered on. Does this indicate big problems?

Is it worth $450 for the 9090DB, KL-888D peakers (Kabuki!), a Pioneer EQ and cassette, and a Sansui turntable?

I would love to test-drive a working 9090DB.

Protection problems should be consider a serious and most likely costly problem. Sometimes it's just a fuse or simple adjustment but that is mostly luck. Blown output devices, bad large power supply components, etc are not simple easy repairs and unless you can do the troubleshooting and repairs yourself would a risky purchase IMHO. $450 sounds to me like top dollar for the whole package and out of line for a 9090DB stuck in protect mode.

Low ball em. I'm sure they'll not sell it for $450, and they may refuse your offer at first but with no others they may come back to you later to settle or offer a counter. It can't hurt to throw something out there for starters. Most folks are just trying to clean house of their old big sound systems to get em a nice puny little Bose something or other.
 
That price sounds absolutely ridiculous! If it were me, I would only be interested in the 9090, the other stuff has very little value. It's my belief that a non-working unit of anything, certaintly not a 9090, can command that high of a price. On the other hand, when a 9090 or another top of the line unit is working well and in superb condition, then they will pull down the serious bucks!
 
That price sounds really high to me too. I would pass all together, but thats just me. Without knowing for sure exactly what the problem is, consider the 9090 basically a parts unit. I think if you show some patience, you will find alot better deal for that amount of money.

I agree with all who have posted here, the 9090DB is an awesome unit in working order, however, not working and protection lite on...... PASS!!!
 
I have one that I just picked up at a thrift store today for 20.00 and it works, the wood case is not in the best shape but it works fine...

I just opened it up to replace some burned out bulbs..

Thanks all - you confirmed my feelings. He was asking $550 and I was able to get him down to $450 but I still wasn't comfortable with that price.

Mingodog - are you selling your 9090DB?
