Sansui 9090db

Good Morning,

I was looking for speakers on CL this morning and came across a Sansui 9090db that is $595.00 in the wood case; the guy selling it is getting flooded with calls. I believe I have secured the deal but have a couple of questions as I am just getting my feet wet in this world and am probobly a bit naive at this stage.

First, seller says the left channel is coming in and out. He bought it from a repair shop in LA area that had repaired the unit but the owner never picked it up. So he bought it for the balance of what was owed. This was 15 years ago and it had been sitting in the repair shop for a long period before that. Seller feels confident that there no major issues and believes that a service and cleaning should be all it needs.

What can I expect to pay to have this serviced, barring any major replacement items?

Is it worth the risk??

I know these things are going for some real money these days.

I appreciate your feedback.

I recently sold mine in two hours for $750 locally, so it's a good deal if working. Hopefully cleaning the selector and Dolby switches takes care of things. Clean all controls as well.

If it needs major work, and you can't do it yourself, it may be expensive.

Its one of the most sought after Sansui's ever. This was the classic high end Sansui that battled with Pioneer SX-1250 for dominance. If you want one of the best, get it. If that is working great. But expect that you may need to spend a few $$ to get it up to spec, but fully functional 9090db's can get up to $1000, and fully restored can go for $1400 to $1500.

That fully restored price just doesn't keep up with the fully restored prices for some other gear. Seems folks want these but the don't command when done.

Nice receiver, though. I partially restored one for a friend and enjoyed it while it was here. Rebuilding the tuner power supply is kinda a must if there are any signs of heat on that board. (top left front).
