Sansui G-7700

Have a friend who wants to sell his G-7700. Cosmetic condition is excellent. But it will not fire up. Nothing at all. What would be a fair price to offer ? Ebay prices for non working units (sold units), range from 150 to 300. Is the unit worth getting and fixing, from a fidelity point of view ? Currently use a 9090db and a 5000x as my main receivers.

Though not a huge step, the x700 series was at a point when Sansui was starting to back down from the quality of their receivers. You will find that it is a good receiver, but just not quite the quality of the G-7000. I think you would like and enjoy it, especially if you had it rehabbed. Years ago I bought a G-7500 thinking it was like the 7000. It was not the same quality and also did not have a toroidal transformer like the 7000; so they were cutting costs at that stage.

The G7700 is an excellent receiver and sounds great, but it does have some Achilles Heels....I have owned two of these, I sold one (a later model) and I still have the other one (earlier model).
The one I own is modified quite a lot, has the best of the best of everything I swapped out....It makes 190watts per channel and rated THD, Nothing wrong with a standard transformer, I wouldn't worry about not having a toroidal transformer.

If the mains fuse is blown, it has likely had a catastrophic failure in the power amp. You need a very very good tech to save this beast, they are difficult and frustrating to work on.

The tuner is difficult to align as the instructions are hopeless in the manual so you need a tuner guru who can decipher the stupid instructions in the manual.

The Fluroscan display is driven by a chip which is next to impossible to get, you need to find a donor unit with one which is working and do a transplant.

There are two different evolutions of the G7700, one has TO-3P output transistors, the other has the more robust MT200 Output transistors, along with that the driver board is upgraded/changed and there is no service bulletin for this.
Also the digital display board is different in the later ones too.

We are not allowed to discuss pricing in this forum, you have to post in the Dollars and Sense forum.

However, I wouldn't want to pay that much for a non working unit, as its a huge investment in time, stress, parts etc etc.....People need to realise, non working units are not worth anything as they don't go!!

The comments above re quality and the technical challenges are correct. The redeeming value in this series is how they sound when working properly. I have a nice G6700 which sounds as good or better than anything else in my extensive gear line up, most of which is well regarded. And the tuners in these things are excellent, particularly when listening to distant stations. Somehow Sansui is able to suppress the noise floor especially well.

I think Kevzep summed it up nicely. There is a lot of potential there, but the probability of success is kinda low. If you can find a good tech who knows something about the 57/67/7700 series and get his opinion first, who knows . . . .

It just so happens that I was the lucky person to get the G-7700 off Kevzep, it is one amazing unit and it floors anyone that hears it. if you can get it at the right price and get it serviced you wont regret it. I get a real kick every day i turn it on.

I just purchased a G-7700. It seems to function great. I think I paid a fair number for it, and it has no hum. All the channels work great. All the buttons seem to be working. And it gets crazy loud. 1 to 100, 15 and the wife starts to fuss, 20 and she is pretty excited. I think my dogs hate it though. All in all, I am very happy.

Excellent, job done!!

Thanks for the replies. Im going to head over and look at it in a few days. Take the cover off and see if there are any blown fuses. If its beyond a blown fuse then maybe offer him $150 for it ? Is that too high ? As far as rehabbing it, I would have Matt in Cincy area do it. Been meaning to take my 9090db down and have him go over it.
