Sansui SP-3000 Speakers ...

A couple of weeks ago, I bought a pair of Sansui SP-3000 speakers ... I had read many of the forum member comments about Sansui speakers ... especially the point that they can be lacking in the bass department ... so I bought them (w/o hearing them) with my eyes wide open ... I was swayed by the oiled walnut cabinets and the real wood latice grill covers :) ...

I figured that a worst case scenario would be that I flip them for what I paid for them ... but maybe I could find a Sansui "fanatic" and make a few dollars ...

I had to test them so that I could represent that they were in good working order ... I disconnected my JBL L112s (the NS-1000s and HPM 100s are still connected) from my Fisher RS 2010 receiver and hooked-up the SP-3000s ...

I have been listening (to CDs with my Sony SCD SE775) for more than a week ... switching back and forth between the 3 sets of speakers ... and I am really impressed ... whatever the SP-3000s may be lacking in bass (and I don't notice much) they more than make up for in the Mids and Highs ... I am gonna hang on to the SP-3000s ... at least for a while ...

In fairness to the other speakers, it's difficult to hear an "apples to apples" comparison cuz the SP-3000s play considerably louder than the others ... and I am not saying the SP-3000s are equal to or better than the others ... but I am surprised how good the SP-3000s sound ...

The specs (off the back plate)

5-Way 6 Speaker
15" Woofer
6.5" Lower Midrange
6.5" Midrange (2)
2" Weeter
2" Super Tweeter

Chip,

I snagged a pair of the older TOTL SP-300s a few months ago. Once I recapped them, I was surprised by how pleasant they sounded.

I picked up a set of SP-2000's for $40 at a yard sales. Hooked them up to my Hafler XL-280 and they sound awesome. There in the garage now, once I clean up the cabs they may replacing my Advents inside.

Tucker I used to have Sp-3500's in my main system. I then happened on a super deal on a pair of very nice HPM-100's it took all of 5 minutes of Brothers At Arms to find the Sansui's on their way to the shop. They are very efficientland great looking but I got nothing else to say about them.

Want a tip on your new found HPM-100's get your self a Spectrum Analyzer and an EQ and adjust these speaker to your room you will be blown away.

That will help any speaker. . .Sansui too. . .

I am a believer in EQs especially if there is a need for one. . .Used right they can do wonders.

Mark W ... I have my first pair of HPM's, along with the AR3a's and a pair of Genesis, in my living room so I am well familiar with the HPM's. The HPM's I bought this morning I just grabbed because at the price I can either give them away, sell them on or (not my plan) part them out at a profit.

I have never read anything here or elsewhere that made me think that the Sansui line of speakers would compete with any of the speakers in my home now, but when somebody stats saying good things I then having just walked past a pair I felt compelled to ask the question. The Marantz Imperial 8's that I rebuilt sound fine, but they don't compare to AR3a's... So, I don't need any more large but only average speakers. I passed on them when I bought the second HPM's this morning and have not read anything here yet that would send me back for them.

I read such mixed reviews on Sansui speakers and have never bothered to connect with a pair. I just passed on the SP3500's (at $100 ask).
Am I really missing something here??

SP3500's are these guys:

At least here on AK, the SP-3500's seem to be regarded as the best speaker Sansui put out in that era. I ran a few pairs of them myself until I discovered the HPM-100s. I think they are definitely worth a listen to at $100 if they are in good shape. Nice ones seem to go for around $300 + s&h on the bay.

The biggest negative for me was lack of bass w/o having to use bass boost or loudness button. The mids and highs sound great though. Mine pull TV duty for that reason. They have an exceptionally thigh WAF as well :thmbsp:

Great, just when I'm happy with my $40 SP-2000's someone brings up HPM-100's and how great they are. Now I have to go find a pair.

I had mint SP-3000's my dad bought new. I didn't really like them. Don't like HPM-100'a much ether. Large Advents / AR's are OK... BUT i hope to god the NS-1000's sound 10x what the rest of these do. I've always wanted to hear a set (NS-1000) and thought from what i have read they should flat blow the SP's out of the water. Right? IMHO, objectively speaking.

I have the NS-690ii's which I have read described as NS-1000's for small rooms. I have never heard the NS-1000's but I would love to.

If the majority opinion is accurate, we can be assured the NS-1000's would blow any speaker mentioned in this thread apart.

Hopefully one day the NS-1000's will cross my path. I have yet to attain audio nirvana.

cross your way and your wallet, nice pair on ebay $900+

I appreciate the info, but it will be a while before I can casually spend that kind of loot. I got these NS-690ii's for $15 two weeks ago on CL. More my style :)

Chip,
What have you decided about your SP-3000s? Keep them, recap them, or sell them?

I have a pair of SP-3000s that I picked up locally for $82.00. I am thinking of recapping and I want to know whether it's worth the money and effort.

I found 3 sp-3500's at garage sale last summer .Paid $5 apiece for them .I asked the man where the 4th one was and he said why would there be a 4th one .Maybe it fell off the truck. The outer edge of all three woofers had come unglued .Surround was o.k. and only the outer edge came unglued .Have not listened to them and originally I had bought them to flip but now after reading this thread I think I'll keep them for a while. They are beautilul looking .

I have way too many sets of speakers (but it didn't keep me from buying a pair of Polks this morning :) ) ... so the SP-3000s have been relegated to being "speaker stands" for a pair of HPM 100s or JBL L112s (can't remember which).

I did not recap them so I have no input there.

FWIW my primary speakers (at the moment) are HPM 1500s.

Chip,

Thanks for letting me know. I think I'll go ahead and upgrade the caps in the SP-3000s and see how they sound.

I'm curious about how different speakers sound. People seem to like the HPMs. Perhaps if I stick with what I have rather than go out in search of something better I can remain in ignorant bliss.

I'll post something about the SP-3000s after the recap.

Sounds like a plan ... I'll be interested to hear your impressions after the recap.

Since I see that you suffer from ... Silver Pioneer Obsessive Disorder ... a very common afliction around here ... keep your eyes open for a "deal" ( I never like to pay "retail") on some 3 or 4 digit HPMs to hook up to your SX-1050.

I know this is a really old thread, but I got a pair of SP-3000's for free, promising to give them a good home. Just hooked them up, and not sure what I'm hearing yet.

Doc, did you ever recap yours? If so, what were the results?
