Sansui SR-212 auto return issues

My Sansui SR-212 - a dumpster find - does return the arm to the pillar, but does not lift it when doing so.
The according gear seems to sit under the autoreturn gear wheel.
Does anyone have an idea what could be amiss or perhaps a digital service manual copy?
Cosmetics are rather good and I’d like to keep this one running.

Michael, there should be linkage connecting the manual lift arm, and the automatic mechanism, is it all gummed up?
 
linkage is ok sofar as I see. If you push the lever under the gear, the tonearm rises. But the gear itself does not actuate this lever in the correct way. Instead of rising the tonearm drops onto the platter while returning.

Without looking at it, my money is still on gummed up linkages.

The old grease is probably the culprit, the stuff can get very sticky.
