Sansui TU-517 Backstands

My Sansui TU-517 came with the rack handles but it doesn't have the backstands. I guess both were options when the tuner was new. The TU-717 cabinet looks like it might be the same dimensions as the TU-517. I was wondering if the TU-517 and TU-717 used the same backstands and if they did what the model number of the backstands was. I measured the two backstand screw holes on the TU-517 cabinet and they measure roughly 3 and 3/4 inches apart on center of the holes. Any info would be greatly appreciated since I'm trying to find a pair that will fit.

The 517 and 717 are almost exactly the same tuner. Different face plate, without the calibration tone control. Uses same switch board, but unpopulated with components for the cal tone. So to answer your question. Yes the back stands will fit.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to the which tuner got them and which didn't.

Backstands For Sansui TU-517

Punker X I was fairly certain they both used the same cabonet and re backstands and rackmount handles my "guess" is they were an option ($) and not everyone purchased either or both. The backstands are more functional than cosmetic protecting the am antenna, cables etc from damage. Thanks for the reply, Rich.

hi majick, i own a 517 too.
whats a back stand?

do you have a link to pics of a back stand?

MavC the backstands are plastic/rubber, not really sure of the material, protectors of the am antenna etc mounted on each end of the back panel. If you wanted to place the tuner on its "back" it will be able to stand level. In stock form there are items on the back of the tuner when placed on its back will make it unstable. Check Ebay for photos of Sansui TU-517/717 etc.

AU/TU Series Back Stands-Bumpers

Yes,the hole layout on the AU/TU-717 and 517 are identical so the Rack Handles and Bumpers/Back Stands are interchangeable. The stands are made out of injection molded plastic and are hollow inside, with cross bracing and Sansui logo.BTW-I also have them on the rear panel of my SC-3110 Cassette Deck,so I wouldn't think they were "an option" on these TOTL components.
They have become increasingly difficult to find separately.I hope this helps.

Charles64 thanks for the info re the backstands. Like a lot of audio equipment the backstands may have been removed/lost by owners who were placeing the equipment in a cabinet and needed to remove them to fit the space. Maybe I'll run into a parts unit on Ebay someday that has the backstands.

My owner's manuals for the AU 717 and TU717 show both the handles and rear bumper stands in both the instructions and on the diagram.

The manual for the AU719 shows the handles, but NOT the rear stands, in either instructions or diagram.

The manuals for the SE7, SC1330 and SC1110 show handles in the diagrams, not in the instructions, and neither show rear stands.

The handles and rear stands (if used) came new in the box with the unit (at least mine did).

Lots of units are missing them because they got old and brittle and fell apart. Make a replacement out of a chunk of pine 2x4, and paint it black. It'll last forever.
