Santa Arrives Early, Leaves Behind ADS L1090's

Spin The Black Circle
Santa was driving a big brown truck and dropped off three boxes with my name on them. They arrived safely with barely a scratch on the boxes. They came with their original boxes and F10 bases which were shipped in the third box. I promptly hooked them up in my HT for a quick test. My living room, where they will most likely find a permanent home, is overrun with a Christmas tree and lots of holiday decorations so it's not the best listening environment at the moment. So far I'm impressed with them. With the sub off in my HT they provide plenty of tight bass along with smooth highs like my L810/710's. They do sound different than my 810's with the bass being the biggest difference. It will be a few weeks until I can do a proper comparison between the 1090's, 810's, and my Monitor Audio S6 speakers. I've already moved them into my living room so we will be listening to Christmas music on them Christmas morning. Here's a couple of pictures for now.

Duff,

Nice! I see you stole my idea of setting them up alongside the big screen. I took your advice also on not to worry about non-shielded speakers affecting a rear projection TV. I flanked the L1290's up with mine too.......

Very niccce!!!

Hey wait a minute! You can't play with them yet. You have to wait till Christmas like everyone else!

Thanks guys and yes I was a very good boy this year. :D

Those are 7" woofers, 2" mid dome, and 3/4" tweeter. The TV is a Toshiba 56" widescreen HDTV.

So far I'm liking the speakers and they are now connected to my Sansui G-8000. Now back to listening to more music. :music:

Nobody asked about who's on the TV screen. Any guesses?

For some reason it reminds me of Sammy Hagar. But then again it reminds me of that movie Poltergeist.
Close, when I shrunk the photo for posting on AK it got a little weird looking. It's Robert Plant from a Led Zeppelin DVD. I always test speakers with Communication Breakdown from one of their early concerts where Jimmy Page is looking preppy wearing a plaid sweater vest. That DVD in DTS is recorded pretty hot and I've pushed over 107 DB at the listening position. :D If you look carefully you'll see John Paul Jones walking away from the keyboard in my family room.

Robert Plant, Ethel Merman, what's the difference...:D

Thanks. So how's the 1290's working in the HT and what are you using as a center channel speaker?

Duff...

Your white whale! Awesome. I look foward to some more analysis of the bass versus the L-810.

Happy Halidays to you and yours.

Mike

Thanks but they are black whales! Too bad they are not wood veneer but they are in beautiful condition. It was interesting how I found them. After watching this pair sell locally on eBay for way too much money I did a quick search on google and on the first page the pair I bought showed up on remotecontrolcentral where I have purchased remotes before. I had no idea they had a for sale forum. The ad was from April 2006 and had the sellers email address so I sent him a message. A couple days later they were on their way to their new home. The seller had owned them since 1988 when he purchased them from a trade-in at the audio shop where he worked. He scored a nice pair of L1290's so decided to sell the 1090's. I'm glad nobody bought them last spring.

That is a great story. Way to go.

The 1090's are great speakers and some people consider them to be the best of the ADS towers.
