Selling a professionally built Carver M500t on CL for $600.

Get a response with a phone number (socal area code) asking if it was nice. I responded Yes.

The email reply:

Okay fine, i'll offer you $800 including the shipping cost via USPS (Express Mail) to California and am also paying you via PayPal payment...Do you accept my offer??

Spidey senses say that I get a PP claim and buyer gets a free amp.

To successfully receive the money back from the claim, the buyer has to return the idem (and outside of eBay, the buyer is responsible for return shipping). Now, they could always return a box of bricks, and then you'd have to go back and forth with PayPal (PayPal will issue the refund as soon as the buyer sends tracking info for the return; they don't wait for delivery).

Also, I'm not sure that $200 would cover the express mail costs for something this large and heavy.

I'd pass.

I am guessing the scam involves a fake paypal payment or a stolen credit card. A legit buyer would ask a LOT more questions. I'd definitely steer clear.

I already turned it down, too many shipping nightmares with legitimate sellers lately.
KISS

Thanks guys.

Anytime anyone on CL says they'll pay more than asking, it's a scam, period. Also, I wouldn't ship anything to an unvetted CL buyer.

Yup...the legit offers I have received asked for a discount from asking price PLUS shipping to another state.

Reminds me of the time I was mailed a photo copy of an $895 bank draft. I was supposed to cash it then give an about to be dispatched driver all if it minus $75 - the price of the CD player I was selling. Was also supposed to give that player to said driver along with the money.

Communication with the "buyer" was by phone and once he was done giving me the above instructions. I thanked him for making me laugh and for giving me something interesting to discuss with friends about the dumb f**k who tried scamming me.

Out of curiosity I took that all too obvious photocopy to my bank, told the story and asked if they would have cashed it. Damned if they didn't say yes, they would.

Maybe a facsimile cheque printed in crayon on a paper napkin would have been accepted too.

I've had those offers too.
I tell them to have the driver bring cash.
that puts a end to it real quick.

It I list for a local sale, I will ship with up front payment by direct funds transfer, no PP. Quickly weeds out the scammers.

I got scammed like this selling a computer years ago....
Sounded safe ( PayPal?) Apparently you can input any email you want into PayPal payment system but instead of letting you know the email is not registered to a known PayPal account , it just sits and says "pending".
When asking the "buyer" why funds are pending they just reply that the funds are in an escrow by PayPal and they will release it when a shipping label is produced to insure the other party has held up their end....
The shipment was to east Africa.....

call the phone number and talk to the guy instead of h=guessing, if the phone number doesnt answer it definitely is a scam
