Schiit Vidar

So I have a bunch of Schiit. I have a Yggdrasil and a Freya in my main system.

My power amp is a rebuilt Yamaha B2. I also have a Bryston 3BSST, but the reworked Yamaha B2 sounds better.

Now this Schiit gear is stunning. They recently released their new Vidar power amp for $699. There is one guy in a forum who bought a pair to use as monoblocks and claimed they sounded better than his Yamaha AS-2100. :yikes:

I'm very curious if these Vidars (I would order two to use as monoblocks) have any chance at sounding better than my B2.

Would love any informed or semi-informed opinions.

As they were just released I think it will take time to see if they are good Schitt or bad Schitt. It will take even longer if ever to compare head to head against every other amp. You may have to be the first on that comparison.

I think enough early reports from impressed Vidar owners can lay to rest the idea that it might be bad Schiit. The question of whether it is good Schiit, or just how good it is, still needs to be determined. It sure looks good though!

I expect that the 100 wpc spec is much cheaper to achieve than a more dramatic sounding number like 200 or 250 wpc of some of the bigger amps out there, but of course those cost much more. And that's the beauty of Schiit's strategy here. Since it does 400 watts as a monoblock, it will handle probably 95% of speakers out there in monoblock mode, without overheating issues, giving people a solid 400 wpc for $1400.

Of course there will be those that immediately cram the Vidar amps into tight closed shelving as they ignore the manual's instructions(and all their other amp manuals as well). And then crank their systems to over 100 decibels, which is no doubt damaging their hearing all the more. Those owners may have an unsatisfactory result, but the rest will do just fine.

So you're pretty impressed with the Freya? Do you have a preference with tubes vs jfet mode? This Schiit gear has me drooling...

The Freya is quite impressive. It replaced an Adcom GFP-750 (recapped and refurbished) in my setup and I would say the sound was just as good and probably better in tube mode.

jFET mode is a nice point of comparison for tube rolling. JFET mode will do better than crappy tubes and will be about the same as average tubes. BUT, drop in some really good NOS tubes and leave the JFETs in the dust.

I'm definitely interested in the Freya and maybe the Vidar later on.
I should hopefully be making it to the Schiiter this weekend or next to do some listening. I wish I had a B2 to bring with me.
