Hello, newbie here, though I've been lurking these forums for some time. Budgeted $300 recently to put together 2nd system. Month later, money is spent and a bench full of gear to bring to life. What i ended up with:

Set of KLH 17's, good condition, sounded fine when auditioned.

Set of KLH 6's. Good cosmetics, seller told me tweeters are weak and likely needs recap.

Sansui G-6000 Receiver, works fine, need cleaning and some TLC.

Sansui G-5000 Receiver, may need some extra TLC. (Parts for 6000?)

Pioneer PL-50 TT in almost mint condition.

Seen several great threads on KLH recaps so the 17's should go smoothly.

The 6's are the early model with the epoxied cabs and so on. Have not read threads yet on best way to attack the epoxied components.

Nevertheless, AK is full of enthusiasm and knowledge. That's why I am here!!

You did quite well! Great gear you assembled.

I restored a pair of early, 1963 model Six's. They had the sealed caps and epoxied woofers. See my thread "Free Pair of KLH Six's From Original 1963 Owner". I documented the entire project. It should help you with the cap replacement. Great speakers!

The Seventeens will be much easier to access the caps. Both use the same values.

Post some pics when you can.

Nice list of gear you got there. All for 3 bills?

I'm sure you've already read about the importance of applying new "dope" to the cloth surrounds, also referred to as sealer. The only product to use is the product sold by Ebay seller "Vintage-AR".

Getting into the 6's is not as daunting as everyone makes it. Follow GD70's thread and you'll do fine. The issue on the older 6's are that the grills are non removable. They will have to be removed and replaced in order to treat the cloth surrounds. Replacements can be found on ebay. I built new ones. Of course this is all part of the fun of this hobby. :D

They look pretty good overall. The one Six you show has moisture damage. As long as it's still sealed, you'll be fine, and it's on the bottom, so no one will really see it anyway. Once you get inside to do the caps, shine light on that joint and make sure no light is coming through. On the exterior, you can fill it with some JB Kwik wood to solidify it. I'm not big on putties but there it won't show unless you have these on their sides.

Quick update: Seventeen's have been recapped, surrounds doped, and new grill cloth. Hanging with some Advents.

I know that the cabinets are different sizes, but I thought that was only the depth of the cabinets with the width and height being the same. This is why I thought that maybe the grills would be the same size...

I could be wrong though about that whole line of thought.

As Beatcomber mentioned, different cabinet, just a overall larger design. If I recall, Beatcomber has a thread on KLH renovation?
 
Update. Five months later have finished restoring the Sixes and Seventeens. Have them stacked and sound wonderful!. I prefer them to the stacked Advents to my ears. Smoother and very non fatiguing. The Advents are on the sidelines.

Ultimately would like to add another pair of Sixes (the later ones next time).

Still have BOLO on Fives and AR3a's.:)

The Fives and 3A's will be a fun comparison! The Fives were designed to compete with the 3A's.
I loved my Six's and Seventeens stacked, even more with Six's stacked!

I had the opportunity to A/B AR3's & 3A's, and preferred the 3's, as did the owner of the 3A's!
No matter what you end up with, you can't go wrong with any of these great speakers!
 
I wish I still had my Sixes to A/B with my current Fives. I remember the Six as a very fine 2-way. The Fives are stellar.
