Scott S177 speakers; has anyone heard them?

I saw some HH Scott S177 speakers on CL I believe are from the mid/late 70s and are reportedly in great shape.

Does anyone have any info or familiarity with this model, and are they worth looking at?

Short answer: no. Long answer: Scott speakers have surprised me. Better than one has a right to expect. Worth a look if they're not too far from home and cheap, IMNSHO.

I think there might be some info on those in the "Thirty Years of High-Fidelity Leadership" brochure...
 
I had a pair of S-197B's here for a while that I refoamed for a buddy. I'm guessing they are of the same series. Pretty nice sounding, I thought.
 
Yeah.. here's the data sheet. They're an 8" system.. so you know what to expect.

It's ok.. really. The more posts, the better IMHO. Note the S-177 seems to have an inexpensive tweeter, and the model below it is a bass reflex design. All the rest are acoustic suspension type cabinets.

Also note that S-186 and S-196 have what looks like Mid and Tweet L-Pad controls.. or they could be rotary switches with fixed resistors. The PRO series definitely have heavy toggle switches that kick-in steps of fixed attenuation in the Mid and Tweet circuits.. perhaps even more function.

Just some notes. The LOW price show for the S-196 ($134 ea) was in '70s dollars as mentioned.. but that amount was a lot when I was a young lad. :)

Please comment on L-pad (rheostats) vs fixed attenuation switches.

Sure the list price was fairly high, but they probably actually sold for a lot less. I owned a pair of the Pro 70s for a while -- not bad, but not special in my system at the time. Don't remember what I was using back then -- maybe a tandberg reciever or some Mac tube equipment? Its been a long time.
 
Well I picked them up today from a nice old gentleman who I thought was about 35 on the phone but turned out to be about 75.

He led us (took a friend just in case he wanted to try to kill us) up to his pad in the assisted living complex he lived in and auditioned them for us. I was surprised at how much he enjoy turning them loud! He then proceeded to tell me that his wife (who was nearby in the kitchen) hated loud music.

They sound much, much, better than I expected. He was asking $20 and I didn't have the heart to talk the nice old man down. Plus, I felt it was a reasonable deal.

They were consecutive serial numbers (if that means anything)

Once I can sneak them into the house, I'll try to post a pic if anyone is interested.
 
I owned one of the higher models in this line... the 12 inch version (S-196). They sounded darn good. They looked even better with their brown grill-cloth and exposed silver faceplate across the front. I ended up trading them for a nice SX-727...

Are those controls pots or rotary switches? One for mid and one for tweet?
