See the awful speaker article in the Boston Globe?

Sad to see what has become of the home paper for AR/KLH/EPI/BA/ADS and others.

It's as if the Baltimore Sun had a "How To Piss On Edgar Allan Poe's Grave" article.

:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Ah, it was probably in the "Lifestyles" section- a trendy addition of "Edutainment" in the old Glob... uh, Globe...

I dunno how it is in your area, but I've noticed that Fox 25, and other local news stations, have added "Celebri-news" to their broadcasts as of late.

Every night, somewhere juxtaposed betwixt the sports, weather, and current events, a story about Britney, Federline, Paris, Lindsey, or other "newsmaker" is squeezed in.

Every night.

:smoke:

The next thing you know, somebody is going to suggest you take an old junky '32 Ford 5 window coupe, drop in a blown big block Chevy, late model running gear, and paint it RED!!!

Think about it.:scratch2:

Well, there's the hook. Learn him about the Boston loudspeaker legacy.

If he won't write it, then do it and submit for publication. Much of published feature work is done freelance.... :thmbsp:

Somebody send him the link to the video jerk blowing up the "Advant," I think it was.... :p:

You gotta try it first. With only two days work, my Minimus 7s with 8-inchers glued in sound fantastic.

Don't try this at home.

I dunno, maybe I'm just selfish and ignorant, but after reading most of the replies here.....perhaps it's better to just leave sleeping dogs lie. Really, how many people are going to read that column and go out and follow the directions given?

Yes, there will be a few people that read that article and do some damage to possibly valuable vintage gear, but AKers trying to educate the world about the merits of vintage gear also has it's downside....namely, the low prices that much of this gear goes for and those of us that rely on that for our hobby.

Rather than draw attention to the article, give it three days and the attention span of America will forget all about it.....keep revisiting it and it might bite us in the ass in the long run.

Mike

Yeah. As the owner of a completely stock 1931 Ford model A restored to concourse level I can say that is just as bad, if not worse, than hacking up a pair of vintage speakers.

The Rub is here.....

You are so right, Mike. My fears, also. I sent an email to the guy and then realized we all might be making a big mistake bringing attention to this wonderful, Affordable, hobby.

I don't think there will be a whole lot of attention given to the article. Optimistically there may be a few young folks out there who will test those old fart speakers and realize what they have.

My favorite part was forgetting to mention driver impedance, and properly configuring them for the optimal 8 ohm load. If you are worried about these ancient behemoths shorting out your BPC, HT 5.none, POS, don't bother even checking out the old speakers before paralleling some new "better" drivers into a juice sucking, amp frying 1/2 ohm masterpiece and setting your house on fire. Some people are just born to be "consumers" glad I am not one of them.

A good point is made here I guess. It was fun getting all cranked up over something though wasn't it?

Perhaps the editor and author will get a little bit of a wake-up with the emails that have been sent so far. Maybe they'll realize that a little more care and research should be put into a topic, and to always consider the two or three viewpoints that may exist.

That article was so badly done though.....throw said ingredients into the shakeandbake baggy, shake vigorously and bake......presto! HT speakers. :sigh: With the lack of information and even an attempt to point to where to get it, this could be downright dangerous as already mentioned re toasting amplifiers.

I suppose some of the comments made could be rubbing the modders on the site a little wrong, and I can be ok with it when the modding is done with respect and with knowldege, and the drivers at least probably saved for refurb later or sold to someone who needs them.

Just not the way it was proposed and delivered in that article.

Anyway, I hope you folks who have said so are correct, that the article will be seen by very few people and have no impact.

I can appreciate the time and effort it takes to flawlessly restore a vintage vehicle, just as I can appreciate my pair of 1976 Klipsch Cornwall speakers that, contrary to some beliefs, sound just great without changing the crossovers or drivers.

But the article was addressed to "dorm warriors", and I doubt he was talking about taking Glidden and a broom to your dad's K-horns after filling them with DiVinci drivers!

Your car is the exception. As much as I can appreciate "vintage" and "original", on most days a well restored Model A will bring about one third the price of a well built street-rodded Model A. Both have their place.:thmbsp:

I saw a pair somewhat like what the author wrote about last weekend at a garage sale. They were yamaha bookshelfs painted lime green with blue grills and 6x9 car speakers horned in. The original tweeters were still there, so I considered offering $2 (they were asking 4), but I have too much crap already.

Regarding stupid media... A local paper ran an article about electrical wiring and updating your house. Unfortunately, it was a US article reprinted here in Canada where the codes are different. Mixing the two codes can be very dangerous. There were many mistakes. That's how people burn their houses down! :gigglemad

He can have his way with these.....
