Sennheiser HD 800 Grado PS1000 w/ McIntosh

Anyone using the new crop of headphones like the Sennheiser HD 800 or Grado PS1000 with their mc pre amps?

Any insight on the value these new headphones bring over the last generation (AKG701, Senn hd650) and how they mate with our McIntoshs?

I have been enjoying listening to speakers for so long I haven't had time for Headphones except on planes. I would like to pick up a pair to use with a server that I could put in the den to use while I am reading. The two that are just coming out that intrigue me are the Sennheiser 800's and the Denon HD-7000's. The initial reports on the 800's is that they are groundbreaking but the Denon's are close backed which I would need if I were sitting near my wife.

i'll check out the Denon AH-D7000 as well. I have a pair of AKG 701s which are very good but i never found them to have quite the control with my mc2300 as my grado rs-1s

Jim.......Same problem here. My fience is a true believer, if three words is the actual answer, why stop there when 250 words seems to make her feel so much better. Thankfully, I have developed excellent selective hearing. I've been perfecting it for years.

Dan, you summed it up well. Men can get by speaking about 3000 words a day, women get antsy if they cannot get in 30k. I think you have been perfecting the longest engagement in history too. :)

I'm thinking about the Denon AH-D7000 as well. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT880 open back and DT831 closed but want more bottom end in a sealed can. The C45 seems to drive them both OK, but I prefer my maxed-out PPA headphone amp for high impedance headphones. The C45 and a pair of low impedance Denons would be great.

I have the new Senn HD800, they are Awesome and run circles around the HD650's.

They are currently backordered again till April.

Just ordered a pair of the Denon's AH-D7000's. I was going to wait 'till the new Sennheisers are available in May but they are open back and my wife would have having to hear what I was listening to. Should have them Thursday.

I'll be very interested in your long term opinion of the Denons. What are they replacing?

I will keep you posted.
I haven't used headphones in about 20+ years except when I was traveling. The last cans I used were Koss Electrostatic.

Has anyone tried running cans via the MCD-500 headphone output? If so, any issues with volume?

If it's the same as the MCD201 headphone output, it's excellent, even with high impedance cans. My 201 sounded almost as good as my dedicated headphone amp.

Fedex dropped off my new Denon AH-D7000 headphones this morning. I have been updating the music on another Hard Disc system that I will be using these cans with the majority of the time, so that is where I was doing my listening the last few hours. I have just hooked them up to my MCD-500 and I must assume that the headphone output on the 500 is after the DAC's just like the Balanced and Single ended outputs because it sure sounds better than direct to the MDS-300 or via the Yamaha CDR-HD1500. Am I correct in that assumption?

I have posted my initial thoughts in the general discussion. Don't want to get scolded for posting in the wrong venue.
