Can anyone recommend a good service tech in the Dallas-Fort Worth area? I'm new to Audiokarma and hope someone here can steer me to a reliable technician for my Kenwood KA-7100.

Thanks!

Welcome to AK!

I would think there would be someone local at a shop.
We have many Texas members, hopefully one or more will chime in here.

PH- what kind of problem are you having with your amp? i am in the dallas area, and i must say, there isn't anyone around here i would entrust that vintage amp to. believe it or not. i rec you send it to AK'ers: Echowars (very kenwood-knowledgeable), Dewickt, Merrylander, jblmar-- i've done bidness with all, and all are above reproach...the little bit of shipping cost will pale in significance

Thanks for the replies!

Thanks Bully and Shrinkboy for the responses.

After a lightning strike four or five years ago, I lost the left channel in my amp and took it to a Dallas shop that specializes in solid state gear. They replaced a couple of circuits (I am woefully ignorant about electronics) with the following on them - NEC UPA63HI M177. They are black, about 1/2" long, and have 7 silver prongs across the bottom.

Since the repair, my amp has been slightly weak in the left channel, and doesn't have the warmth and presence that it once had. It tends to get a little tinny at higher volumes too. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I may just have to contact EchoWars and send it to him.

The good news, IIRC, is that the KA-7100, unlike the bigger KA-9100, uses parts that are generally available.
EchoWars is in Lee's Summit, next door to KCMO, so not "too" far from Dallas.

I'll give him a shout as soon as I buy a "temporary replacement" for while my 7100 is in the shop. By the way, what's IIRC??

A friend of mine has had good luck with Bayard keeping his tempermental Luxman amp running. I visited the shop and was impressed by its cleanliness.

VCR Electronic in Medallion Center in Dallas has done some good work for me on an old Radio Shack FM Concertmaster radio from the sixties, and figuring out a work-around on an H/K Citation 12 amp (which I declined to repair).

Others I know have had good experiences with these guys when they were near SMU.

i've seen people get the hose around and half ass treatment from all the known places here in town, pm ....myself included. i have no trouble asserting that if you want your gear treated right and don't know how to do it yerself, then send it out to someone who cares about doing it right, like the guys i mentioned up top....

Considering the dangers of shipping, local service for a typical piece is always preferred in my book.

The only complaints I've heard about Bayard is they charge too much. Although nice, a KA-7100 isn't exactly an esoteric piece of gear. My personal experience, and that of people I know, were all good experiences with the three shops I mentioned.

Am I leaving my Mac gear with those guys? No. But for mass-market stuff, sure. I trust those folks more than I trust the Brown Truck folks.

Funny you should mention Mac gear ... there is a highly respected local tech who used to work out of Hillcrest Hi-Fidelity that specializes in Mac tube amp repairs ... but he ain't cheap ...

One of the old Hillcrest Hi-Fi guys... where is he?!?

Thanks to all for the insight and options on SS repairs in DFW. Looks like both paths have their advantages and disavantages. I may just have to keep watching for a nice KA-9100 until I can learn how to properly repair my old friend, the KA-7100 I bought new in 1978. I just missed a -9100 in the AK Classifieds. Like so many things in life, timing is everything.
