That's right! 3 (!) Technics RS-1520 reel to reel decks for $150.00 each!!!

Holy shinola, I can't contain myself right now. A guy is selling off a bunch of gear he's got in storage and has 3 of these, as well other gear like Otari's. I was first to respond to his Craigslist by e-mailing him yesterday. He said he would honor that I was the first who called him. Of course it helps that both he and I know George Strait and we began to shoot the sh!t about him for a while on the phone. :D

I will be meeting with him tomorrow to pick them up and I will post pictures when I get back. He said they are in very nice and fully working condition!

Hot dang! I can't contain myself right now! Here's a pic I found on the web:

I had a chance to buy one of these once on the auction site with a BIN at about the same price, but I hesitated too long and someone else grabbed it.:dammit: Congrats on your new machines.:thmbsp:

A great product,at a jawdropping price.

x 3.

Whaddaya say about Fate........ :D

What is the difference between the 1500 and the 1520? :scratch2:

omg. Guy has no clue what they are worth. What a deal.

So how much for one? 200 sounds fair huh? I'll take one. :) :) :D

You stole them. Grab the Otaris too..they're excellent machines.

The difference between the 1500 and the 1520 is that the 1520 has front panel calibration adjustments and fine-tuning.

Just finished talking to the gentleman selling me the units. Great guy, we talked for quite a while about George and country stuff. He said he also is pulling out to let me see the rest of his stuff. He's got Nakamichi cassette decks, and 4 Otari 5050 reel to reels. He owns a radio station outside of San Antonio and all this stuff came out of it. Hmmmm....I hope the Technics don't have too bad of long head wear. He says they still have a lot of life in them, and are cosmetically in great shape. God, I just hope I don't see a playback head with a Grand Canyon of a trough thru it.

Anyway, I'm leaving to go and pick them up. Will post pics and a follow-up later.

I'd be asking him about turntables etc.

Technics reel to reel find

WHOA!!!!!!

This is the third fantastic find that I have heard of in the last two weeks!

This is terrific!

Way to go fella, you hit a good jackpot!

Alllllllriiiighty then.

Drove 1 hour to a little town called Hondo outside of San Antonio to meet up with my new freind. Small world indeed. He knows a lot of the people I do from my days when I was in the business. We talked for more than an hour while my poor wife and dog waited in the car  . Good thing the weather was awesome outside.

Anyway, I drove off with 3 Technics RS-1520 reel to reels in decent condition. They operate fine and are very dirty, but nothing a good bath won't fix. He showed me the rest of the gear that he is selling off. 2 Technics SL-P1300 CD players - very dirty, but cosmetically fine and both in working condition - $100.00 each. He also has 2 Nakamichi MR-1 cassette decks with rack handles - $100.00 each. 4 Otari reel to reels model MX-5050 in OK condition - $150.00 each. I told him I would return this weekend for the Technics, possible the Nak's, but I skipped on the Otaris.

I'm cleaning the Technics right now. They are cleaning up very nice. I'll post a pic of them when I'm finished, but here is the pic of them as I picked them up this afternoon from his office - in all their nekedness and dirtyness glory

1 down, 2 to go.

Pretty, aint she. They aren't without their problems though. It seems 1 will have to be sacreficed to be the donor to help the other 2 machines. I will need to make a set of side panels for 1 machine, but other than that they are all intact. The heads show no visible wear. Obviously they do have wear, but none so bad that it is visible. Cosmetics cleaned up nice with some Windex, and the whole tape path cleaned up also very well with some Iso-alcohol.

Still, they look nice. :music:

I'd be asking him about turntables etc.

Hey Theo, that was the second thing I asked him, "Where are the Technics 1200's?" He knew that I knew what he had and just smiled. He said he wished he still had them but they were gone a few years ago when the studio made the transition from records to hard drives. Oh well.

I had a feeling that might possibly be the case.Given that he had kept the RS-1520s,I pondered whether they might also have kept their phono equipment.

If you could end-up with an SP10 Mk III,just by asking,it would be worth asking.

You still have a great score.

Do you plan on keeping and using any of the 1520s?

Well, I don't know yet what will happen. One will not power up, yet the fuses are good. Another is 100% working, and the third powers up and works fine, but one of the top tape posts is bent. May have to be replaced or straightened with any luck. If I can track down why one unit is not powering up and repair it then I will have 3 fully working units. But if I can't figure it out time permitting I will use the one with the bent tape post as the donor and swap power supplies.

My intentions are strictly to flip these as I already have 3 reel to reels and I really need the money. I will probably keep one of the 1520's, and sell the other 2 plus my current 1506. I just don't need any more reel to reels. The other gear that I'll pick up from him this weekend will be flipped as I don't need any of the cassette decks or CD players. I'm kinda tossed on possibly keeping one of the SL-P1300 CD decks because of the cool look, but not sure.
