I went to an estate sale today and purchased a pair of Marantz 5G speakers and a Sherwood S7100A receiver, my second such receiver, but I sold the last one.

I happened to get it with the original operating manual, mounting template, circuit diagram and warranty receipt.

The receiver is in really good condition, needing only a cosmetic cleaning.

Looks great not, but as yet tested.

The last one I had was great sounding for a low powered piece, but sweet nonetheless.

Opinions on this piece are welcomed . . .

Cheers

I got one of those cheap via CL awhile back: it is a very warm and mellow sounding receiver as I recall. I still have it, unused downstairs. Keeping it in case I ever decide to go into vinyl for a third setup sometime (not likely, but...) or something.

It was the first of many Sherwoods that I have collected and to be honest not particularly my favorite. I tried pairing it with baby Advents and similar small speakers but never really got into it. They are plentiful and generally easy to pick up for very little money however. The S-7310 is not very sought after and rarely gets more that 1 bid on the usual auction site. While not necessarily pretty with its fake wood cabinet, it blows away the S-7100 in performance and sound quality. In terms of entry level Sherwood Japanese built receivers, I would rate the S-7200 the best overall value. I admit though that I am partial to the USA built S-7900/8900 or SEL-200 in terms of power, tuner performance and overall build.

Uh, the S-7100 has a fake wood cabinet? Not all of them, at least not the one I have in my son's room powering a pair of Allison Sevens… It's actually once of the nicest wood cabs I've ever seen, and favorably compares to the wood cab on my Pioneer 980, which is as near to a mint system as it's possible to get baring finding one NIB. (Mine was run for a couple of months, and re-boxed and forgotten until I bought it. It didn’t even have dust inside it…)

Yea, that is a nice Sherwood. I wish I had picked up an S-7110A, but the seller went up on price & I passed.

Right now I have a S-8900A that is down, but hope to get it up & running again soon. Before it died, I enjoyed the smooth sound from it with my AR-5's.

No, as I posted the S-7310 and some others in that series(S-7X10) had the fake wood, the S-7XXXs were all nice walnut. My point is that there is quite a step up between the entry level S-7050 and 7100s models and the S-7200 and above. Most non Sherwood fans get confused with all the different models that they produced in the 70's
