Shure M92E distortion

Just picked up a nice Technics Sl-B200 for 40$ (CDN) with Shure M92e. Everything works and looks fine except that sound is extremely distorted. The guy said he replaced the stylus with "new' and in fact it looks like new - but more like Flinstones record player stylus! The original stylus was broken and from what I could see on the net. this one has nothing in common with fancy elliptical design of the original. I have not being into turntables for ages but if memory serves well this one looks like ancient Zafira stylus. Also, cantilever is extremely stiff, this thing must be decades old and elastic material hardened like a stone. I have found replacements for around 18$ from different places but before buying want to make sure if something else might be causing the distortion.

My suggestion is to buy an Audio Technica AT-92E to replace the Shure M92e. The other option is to upgrade the stylus of the M92e.

Well....wow! That replacement stylus certainly isn't a Shure original..!! And that cantilever is an odd one! Shure still make an original replacement for the 92E, and they are available on both Ebay, and Amazon... genuine Shure always have their name embossed/engraved on the front, so you can easily tell if it's an OEM aftermarket replacement - much like the one you have now!

I think original Shure stylus had been discontinued long ago but there are quite a few which seem to be a decent replacement. A lot of sellers put the picture of original stylus but mention "for reference purpose only."
One place is turntableneedles and they seem to sell on Amazon and z-may as well. I know about AT 92E but right now do not see the reason to swap the whole thing.

If you would like to upgrade the stylus, the Shure N110HE is a high performance hyper-elliptical. Others that should be an upgrade include N96, N97, N111 HE (has the brush). I'm sure there are others I am not thinking of.

FWIW, I've been buying Tonar styli from a Canadian vendor - Casa Dia Vinyl Records. I live in BC, he's in NB and Canada Post ain't the fastest but shipping is only a couple of bucks. One of my turntables is equipped with an M92 with a generic needle and it sounds fine.

That is, all Amazon and ebay M92e stuff is generic and B&H who has the original does nor ship to Canada ?! Top secret technology I assume...Will check those guys from NB, thanks

So, finally I went with domestic Casa Dia Vinyl Records (thanks 62Vauxhall) and ordered the original N92E for 51 CDN, shipping was 2$!
No more worries about stupid customs/manufacturer`s restrictions and price is the same as 35US plus shipping from Amazon.

No worries, hope it works out. Personally I like supporting a fellow Canuck.

As I mentioned, with Canada Post it's hurry up and wait. Since you are geographically closer, logic dictates you you should get your order faster than I get mine which is agonizingly slow.
