Shure RS100 cartridge???

This weekend I found a Shure RS100 on one of the donor TT that I had picked up to make a RCM- as near as I can tell this is like a Shure 97xe, is that correct? Any opinions on this cart? I'm pretty darn sure that it will need a new stylus, AFAIK that should be about $20-$25.

Suggestions? Experience?

Interesting model number. It was an OEM job for Radio Shack. The plain RS100 was a Shure M3D, an oldie goldie. The RS100E was a clone of the Shure M91E. Which one do you have?

It's a RS100, so then it'd be a Shure M3D. I guess an oldie goldie. Is this something worth pursuing? I'm quite sure based on the condition of the TT that it has been stored in a pretty hot environment (the mat was pretty warped) and I'm pretty sure the needle is shot.

The next question is it something that would mate well with the Pioneer 12d that I have.
 
As I recall, the N3D stylus tracked at about 6 grams, so using the finger test for compliance, you won't feel as much movement as with modern styli, but there should be some. If you feel none at all, then yes, the stylus is shot.

The N21D stylus was a lower-VTF replacement. There was an N7D as well. I don't know of a source of original Shure styli (possibly Garage-A-Records), but for 1960-level tech, I really think aftermarket replacement styli will do the job well enough.

I was hoping JICO made an SAS stylus for this cartridge, but darn, no luck.

A lot of people really like the jukey sound of these old monsters. A fan of this cartridge may very well happen along and fill you in on the optimum care and feeding of the M3D. Meanwhile, I'll continue to try to find a catalog entry for this Radio Shack clone.

That's very encouraging- and my local RS has a stash of (very) old styli. Here's hoping.

Now, if you could quantify "jukey" sound...
 
After a closer look at it (which requires a camera stronger than my bifocals) I'm not sure it's in the greatest shape. If you look at the upper left hand side in the pic you can see a crack in it. I've never seen a cracked cart before, but I'm guessing it's not good.

Y'know, a $200 compact camera can be pretty darn helpful these days.

Is the cart likely toast or are cracks not a big deal?

My suggestion? was ya shoulda called me when I was up in Barton a few weeks ago. :yes: As I had something in me pocket :D. Even spent a day in Newport showin the wife more of the old stomping grounds.

LOL, the only reason I didn't is because I didn't want to interrupt your vacation! Did you guys have a good time?

You didn't give me a number. caught a bunch of brookies, a cousin cussed me out because I thought the limit for keepin was lower. A day on Crystal lake in the boat (wind blowing 30mph and morning temps in the high 40's low 50's liked to froze the "fellers" off) 150-160 smallmouth took the edge off.
You still lookin for a decent cart?

At least you caught a mess of fish... or at least got a darn good windburn.

Yeah, I am still looking for a cart, but work has come first and I still don't know squat about TT/carts/etc.

I shoulda just gone fishin. :yes:
