2019 was a banner year for my music collection, many excellent releases. But there's so much coming out its impossible to catch it all.

What was your favorite sleeper release for 2019?not the big names, the little names, the ones that didn't make the headlines, the ones that get buried in the Playlist threads and don't get airplay outside of the college stations (which you best be tuning into or you're absolutely missing out!).

And yes, just pick one if you can. (Reissues are fine if the original is unobtainium, but that's not what I'm looking for).

I'm not sure if she's a big or little name. She's had some attention, for sure. Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Merring) ~ Titanic Rising (Sub Pop)

Don't know the LP or the gal, but I like the cover art. What's this gal's music like?

Like a hybrid of dream pop, indie rock, 70s soft rock, George Harrison, Beach Boys (Pet Sounds era), Paul McCartney, Harry Nillson, and other things. Absolutely uplifting even though the themes are rather dark.

Heard this earlier in the 2019 year and liked it. Very retro sounding. I wasn't familiar with La Luz when I bought this. Good stuff.

I never once seen anyone mention this record and didn't know of it till I seen it in the store a week ago.
To tell the truth, older big name artist and their new work is really what is a sleeper these days. They are not promoted anymore, never played on the radio and not talked about in youth circles.

Thanks Dan, I'll keep an eye out for that one, maybe see if I can find it Tuesday on our weekly trip to the city.

Purple Mountains (Dave Berman of Silver Jews solo album). I love Silver Jews, but this may be his best work. Sadly, he died shortly after it's release.

Garcia Peoples! They had two albums out this year and they’re both brilliant. Natural Facts is more indie rock: short, well-written songs. One Step Behind has two songs: the 30-minute title track which starts out similar to a Terry Riley piece and coalesces into another catchy guitar rock piece before taking a few more turns out into the distance. The second song is an 8-minute piano ballad. Great stuff.

To comment on what’s been mentioned: I’ve heard lots of good stuff about both the Weyes Blood and Purple Mountains records and need to check them out. Haven’t heard the Shana Cleveland, but saw her open for the Mountain Goats in the spring. It was a pretty good set, though not my preferred style.
