That arc is just being powered by the energy stored in a power line inductive compensator ( for the line capacitance).

The switch was supposed to be opened cold, as a subsequent switching operation after a sulfur-hexafloride switch does the actual interruption.

Had it been carrying a real load, most of the metal in the area would be missing.

Realy amazing once the plasma path gets established.Your absolutely correct about "no load" had there been established current "arc flash" gets real nasty Hot.:scratch2:

That video reminded me of a geysir I saw many ,many times while I was stationed in Iceland

This geysir "Strokkur" erupts every 2-3 minutes.
 
As far as eyeballing power line faults, I had a 5 kv feeder from the top of the pole out back, break, fall into my yard, and arc for over 30 minutes. MY power was out, as the hot side was on the far side of the break from my transformer, but the line was draped over my neighbor's garage AND my PHONE LINE !! :yikes:

With all that arcing, I wonder what it was like to be hooked up to a transformer on the arcing line?


There is a 2 or 3 foor diameter circle in my back lawn that grows different vegetation now. (due to soil chemistry changes??) GHrass dies, and wierd weeds pop up.

And just recently, I was watching live helicopter video "traffic" coverage after a nasty storm, showing my dad's neighborhood, when they zoomed in on a "house fire" in progress that turned out to be a transformer working itself into an explosive frenzy... a transformer that I was familiar with, as it was about 300 feet from my dad's house. They got the whole thing with their new HD chopper camera, and I'd LOVE to get my hands on THAT tape....
