Don't know what they put in the tapes State-side but I never got any smell off of one, new or old. You sure it's not the print on the inlay card you're smelling?
Are you referring to the glue-like plasticky smell that greets you when you first open a new cassette case? The smell was usually associated with the newer clear bodied pre-recorded cassettes. I never noticed it with the older beige bodied tapes.
A lot of my store prerecorded cassettes still have that smell (whenever I bought a new tape, I would make a copy and put the original away). Oh memories...
