Sme 3009 Rebuild

Hi Guys,
I'm brand new here.
I have an SME 3009 arm that needs some attention, as parts of it seem to have too much play, so it may need a rebuild. I have the model that uses a pulley for the anti-skating wire.
Does anyone know someone that could do a rebuild or tuneup as needed without charging more than buying another one in good shape ?

The 3009 is a knife edge bearing design. If you pull or twist the arm it will lift the knives off of the V-blocks. This is normal operation not a flaw.

I do appreciate your help, as was beginning to feel I'd wasted
my money. To set it up correctly, what do I need besides a stylus weight gauge and owner's manual ?

You or anyone else that needs in depth vinyl info needs to join THE VINYL ENGINE forum at www.nakedresource.com. You can download the owner's manual for any SME tone arm or others at this site. You may want to pick up the HI-Fi News test record for set up and it comes with the protractors.

Which SME ?
Not sure, but it says only 3009 on the base and it is off of an early Thorens 125 which I would guess is a Mark I (Why don't they put full model #'s on the gear?). The SME also has the little pulley for the wire-suspended anti-skating weight.
If that description doesn't narrow it to one exact model, I could describe it more fully or answer any questions about its parts, etc.

Grumpy, thanks for the Vinyl Engine site. I guess I need to update my Adobe software to the 5 version, as nothing will read out on the manual downloads. I'm in the process of switching to a new laptop, as this 5-year-old desktop is really straining to keep up and it keeps crashing with some stupid note about doing something "illegal">weird.

Sounds like a 3009 S2 Improved. Good arm that works well with a V15 MXR Shure, AT440, 681 Stanton or even some of the moving coils.

Didn't the S2 use the newer style Din plug where as the Series II used the straight 4 or 5 pin plug ?

These guys used to have a few parts for the older ( 4 digit ) SME arms http://www.flatearthaudio.com/

The S2 can be the flat SME plug or they offered a conversion kit to female RCA jacks. The later production versions came with female RCAs.
