So’monized ADS L1590 - bi-amping and non

Stupid question...I thought the 1590’s were 8ohm speakers...why bi-amp when 1 could easily handle them....it’s not like they are kappa 9’s...

Not a stupid question. But when you use an active crossover and remove the passive crossover, the high and low signals get separated. You eliminate inter-modulation distortion between the 2 signals.
Also eliminate the loss in the low frequency by removing the coil. That makes things clearer than with the passive crossover. Imagine ADS getting even clearer.

Finally got an Email, guy is coming by to deliver them, all the stuff. Told him just the speakers were fine for 300$. He is rebuilding his house to make room for his mom. She is getting sick and he has no room for his gear. I will let you know what I see about the size on
the crossovers. I'll take some pics.
Oh man!!!! YAAASSS!!!

Well, ADS did have a C2000 just to be able to do that... also, it sounded incredibly better. All in all I see your point completely. But, we are all ones who venture into the lands of the unknown and “bigger/better”. Why stop at one amp? Cheers brother.

Much cooler explanation here folks. Nicely said.

Wanted to ask you Tim, what did you use as signals when you did your testing? Was it a TT analog? CD player? Just don't remember.

@David_NC what was that dac we used?

anyway, we used a dac and HD stream. Just for consistency. When I do my next A/B I will use my Fiio dac and lossless/Flac files. But, it did sound really good. Really, I should use a really good press wax of Vanessa Fernandez on my Garrard table. All stops not had here. Has an SME arm and SPU cart. Yup, that’s what I will use next time. Vinyl is just better on all fronts.

The DAC is a Topping E30. I have that Vanessa on SACD, if you want the convenience of that! ;)

Thanks Tim. It helps me understand a little better to know the source. Lossless/Flac is no doubt a good source. I want to eventually get into streaming hi res files. Getting a dedicated media server, and load it up with movies, and music.
Any way looking forward to your next session of testing and discoveries.
Their was another brainiac from ADS, Ed Meitner. He has an impressive biography, and I remember reading an article about 6 or 7 years ago about dithering, and jitter. He designed a lot of the digital circuits with the past knowledge of analog way above some of the younger engineers. Not sure what your budget is, but his equipment is worth checking out, and at least learning about. Hope you enjoy the knowledge.

Off topic but my Advent woofers are done by Rich and on the way home. Rich finally came clean on the L1590/3s. He told me that a customer from Canada put 2 pairs of L1590/2s together to make the 3s himself. I was just getting the idea of stacking. Doing the Advents got me thinking of the stacking gig. Putting them top to top in a D'Appolito array. Has to be an experiment worth doing. So any one willing to stack the big boys let me know and do it for all of us LOL

You just totally made the argument for bi-amping ..

Tubes on the mids and treble ..
And big SS power on the woofers ..

And every time that I've ever bi-amped, I notice a distinct improvement in dynamics and clarity ..

This was essentially an experiment on the importance of amps .. a distinction that I keep trying unsuccessfully to make ..

Yes, sure did Tim. Vertical bi-amp in page three of the C-2000 manual. One amp for the left speaker, one amp for the right. Horizontal one amp for L/R Tweeters/Mids other amp for Woofers. Each way has a benefit but ultimately, I'll do both just to hear, and then Horizontal when I settle into a tube amp for the Tweeters/Mids and take advantage of the sweet tubes on the high end. I know it's important to match the gains when you Horizontal bi-amp, and I need just a bit more experience to do that. Well, that and a tube amp (wink).

Garry

No experience required .. just a gain control on one of the amps and your ear ..
Kind of like an enhanced loudness button ..

Because you can take advantage of the differing sound characteristics of two very different amps and..
Typically dynamics and clarity can improve when they're bi-amped ..

Active crossover not required ...

Update about the aforementioned amp shootouts and recording them. Trying to do all different types for fun.

Conclusion:

My area or room to be used has too much reverberation with high ceilings and hard walls along most... Very difficult to make the room acoustically acceptable.

I will see if there is another way, but for now. this is dead in the water. Was a fun idea though.

Just sitting back loving the 1590's and life. Cheers ya'll

It's all okay Tim, really. We get it but it's mostly for fun. All of us that post in Glenns thread understand the limitations and that it does not truly reflect the accuracy of our systems. But it is fun and we all love sharing each others systems. No matter what you do one simply cannot duplicate the true dynamics of our systems and to boot, the limitations of YT's compressions. Do what you feel comfortable with, but just know, that we for the most part just love showing our systems in action, and enjoy others as well, not forgetting to mention how we've come to appreciate others selection in music choices. I've ordered so much music from Glenns thread.

As a side, I would not have bought my L1530's if it weren't for another member posting his in the Show us your System thread. I passed on those speakers 3 times until I seen his videos.
