1. Buy a pair of JBL L300's. This is nothing new. Nelson Pass was right about these. Even stock, they're superb, but we're going to take them to a level mere mortals never dreamed of - we're going to break the control room glass! Don't pay top dollar because you'll be trashing or reselling everything except for the cabinets and the L85 compression driver, its horn and the tweeter. Don't worry about the lenses, I don't use them. The stock, wax encased L300 crossover is quite possibly the coolest audio thing I've ever seen, but alas, it too must go.
2. Buy a pair of JBL 2216Nd woofers from Simply Speakers. The ones used from 20Hz to 800Hz in the $28K JBL M1 studio monitor. They'll run you about $1,000 a pair.
3. Buy a cheap Chinese tube amp. Don't go all crazy, all you need is a watt or two. I'm using the infamously horribly designed, completely unmodified Nobosound with some Russian tubes and it sounds glorious in this setup.
4. Buy this electronic crossover for $119
5. Solder up this ridiculously simple crossover to roll off the highs in the horn and block lows from the tweeter: 1.0 mfd in series with the tweeter, .2mh coil in series with the mid horn and a 2.2 mf cap across the horn and use and 8 ohm L-Pad on the horn. That's it. Set the Behringer for 700Hz. Use virtually any solid state amp to drive the 2216ND's direct, and tweak the levels with your ear or a computer.
NOTES: I connected all drivers in phase and you can flip the phase of the woofer and the tweeter/mid combo with the Behringer, but if you want to flip the tweeter phase by itself you'll need a double pole double pole switch added to the small parts list, or you can do it manually.

Behringer Super-X Pro CX2310 V2.
Buy it new for $119 from an authorized reseller and make sure to register it with Behringer to get a three year warranty. It sounds great but it is a Behringer. I'm just sayin'. You'll probably need some XLR to RCA cables as well. Four female XLR to RCA and two Male XLR to RCA.5.
