So My Girlfriend Knocked Over My Big Paradigms...

Thanks for the responses so far...only I can't diagnose further because I can't open this $%#& speaker! I've removed 8 screws from the back and 10 from around the bottom woofer and neither the back of the speaker cabinet or the woofer will budge.

What now? Anyone have experience with this line from Paradigm?

Here are some crappy phone pics if that helps..

HAHAHA!!! ...I fell for that too on my 5se MKIIs ... they have that back panel glued on pretty damn good. :D

What I found that works is that after you take the screws out from the drivers you can take a corkscrew and carefully insert it into the screw holes and lift them out.

Be careful with the white gaskets. They are a PITA to put back in place correctly, it takes some patience.

Got a multimeter? If not, I can bring one over.

Or, conversely, pull the woofers out of the good speaker, hook them up to the crossover in question, and see what happens.

My bet is something got dislodged in the woofer itself. If it's xover, I can probably fix it for you.

And now the woofers aren't working right.

They are Paradigm 9se's on 8" stands. The speaker fell flat on its face last night and two of the prongs holding the grill on broke. Other than that, they looked fine. She was very upset so i assured her it was fine and that i wasn't mad.

Fast forward to today, i sat down to listen to some music and the right channel is very quiet. I put my ear up to it and it appears that the tweeter is working but the two woofers are not, or they are but just at very low volume? I didn't spend much time diagnosing because i was afraid i might damage them worse by playing music through them.

So what do you think? Can they be fixed? Do i need a new girlfriend?? :p

Spec sheet with pictures on the 9se's for reference:

And to think... i was planning on selling these within a month or two...

Switch girlfriend, definitely!

You should have given her the chance to do the repair. She just might have turned out to be an electronics wiz. Then you keep her! :D

I can see someone knocking over a speaker by accident...but both of them?

Did she do at the same time, or did several weeks pass between the two accidents?

I'm betting on a voice coil that got overextended when they hit the floor. Does a gentle push on the cones move them at all or are they locked into place?

Sorry about the speakers. I hope you find what's amiss. Your girlfriend no doubt feels terrible! How can she ever repay you?:smoke:

Unfortunately, I believe this is what happened because it happened to me but with just one speaker.

My incident also involved a girlfriend but it was her freaked out cat that knocked one of my Monitor Audio speakers off the stand flat on it's face..

It had weak volume from the woofer in that speaker and it turned out to be the over extended voice coil.. The woofer moved but with some resistance, dragging the coils as it tried to play..

I had to purchase a new woofer, I suggested burying the cat but was overruled by her buying the woofer and few other favors..

All is good now, just had to use backup speakers for a week...

I have owned the same Paradigms and luckily for you they are not too impressive. Consider it providence and move forward. If your girlfriend can cook, keep her. If not...
