Songs that mention other artists...

Skid Roper did a song called "Elvis is Everywhere" where he mentions Elvis a lot and also Michael J Fox.

Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper, they also mentioned Joan Rivers in the song.
(Thanks for making me laugh this morning)

"Far Side of Crazy" mentions The Beatles or as Mick Jagger called em the 4 headed monster

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YskN8LIOXEk.

The song also alludes to David Chapman, Ronald Reagan, John Hinckley, Jr, and Jodie Foster.
Glad to see another WOV fan!

Mojo and Skid also performed "I'm Gonna Dig Up Howling Wolf", "Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child" and "Don Henley Must Die".
More recently, Mojo has done a couple of songs about his friend Kinky Friedman's political career.

Personally, I'm partial to Skid's washboard playing.

It was actually off a Don Henley solo album, Building the Perfect Beast called The Boys of Summer.

There was a cover (The Ataris?) that changed the lyric to "Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac."

Well I saw Peter Paul & Mary's ''Rock & Roll" already so it's crossed off my list along with a few others but I haven't seen Rick Nelson's "Garden Party",he mentions John and Yoko, and a Chuck Berry reference of Johnny B Good and I think a couple more, guess I'll have to go spin it.
Also didn't see The Guess Who's "Truck'n off across the sky" from Live at the Seattle Paramount album with Fabian,Conway Twitty and Genie C Riley mentioned.

Off the top of my head...

Donovan: Jefferson Airplane ("Fly Trans-Love Airlines")

Ane Brun: Gillian Welch ("Gillian")

Gillian Welch: Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, John Hartford ("I Dream a Highway")

Syd Barrett: Bob Dylan ("Bob Dylan Blues")

Richard Thompson: Al Bowlly ("Al Bowlly's In Heaven")

Chuck Berry: Ludwig von Beethoven ("Roll Over Beethoven")

Down in Monterey - Animals (Sorry if already mentioned)
Slow Turning - John Hiatt "...banging on the drums like Charlie Watts

Hey!

Too lazy to read the other posts but:

Wilson Pickett mentions Solomon Burke,The King Of Rock'n'Soul, on "Everybody Needs Somebody" (Burke had just done the song).

Then there's Stand By Me by Spyder Turner who not only mentions the singers - Sam Cooke, Melvin Franklin, Billy Stewart, Jackie Wilson, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, James Brown, Chuck Jackson and Smokey Robinson - but imitates their styles.

Of course, Bitchin' Camaro by The Dead Milkmen mentions Tony Orlando.

King Uszniewicz mentions a couple of bands on the album Twistin' And Bowlin', but I'm not going to tell you what song. I'm going to let those who doubt me listen to the whole thing.

I Hate To Be A Jerk, But

The Beatles (Let It Be) - "For You Blue"

Near the end of the song Paul is speaking to George and reference is made to Elmore James, a true pioneer of the slide guitar ...... "Elmore James got nothing on you".

I hate to be a jerk, but that's George Harrison speaking about John Lennon (the Johnny of "Go, Johnny, Go") who is enjoying himself playing slide even though Yoko Ono is joined to his hip.

R.A.M.O.N.E.S. by Motorhead mentions...you guessed it...the Ramones.

Speaking of the Ramones, Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio mentions Jerry Lee Lewis, John Lennon, and T-Rex

Jason & the Scorchers' "Moonshine Guy"

And he yells and he roars
Likes the Stones hates the Doors
Thinks the Beatles sing for girls
He's a moonshine guy in a six-pack world

Alan Jackson..."Don't Rock The Jukebox...I wanna hear George Jones. My heart ain't ready for the Rolling Stones"
Steely Dan...Parker's band. Even gets Charlie's label, Savoy, in there.
The Dan again...namechecking themselves in "Show Biz Kids"..."Got the Steely Dan T-shirt"
Keith Anderson..."Picking Wildflowers"...."got Tom Petty playin' in the Silverado"

Tom Robinson in "Grey Cortina" mentions Bruce Springsteen
Furlined seats and lettered windscreen
Elbow on the windowsill
Eight track blazing Brucie Springsteen
Bomber jacket, dressed to kill

Bowling for Soup's "1985", 2004. Mentions a dozen bands.

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned twenty four
Only been with one man
What happen to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of Whitesnake's car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing has been alright since

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
Cause she's still preoccupied

She's seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink
Even Saint Elmo's Fire
She rocked out to Wham
Not a big Limp Bizkit fan
Thought she'd get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where's the mini-skirt made of snake skin
And who's the other guy singing in Van Halen
When did reality become T.V.
Whatever happened to sitcoms, game shows

She hates time make it stop
When did Motley Crue become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop
Stop!
