Songs that stab you right in the heart.

I find it rather difficult to listen to The Beatles, Hey Jude without getting a bit choked up. Back in the day when the song was pretty new my Dad and his buddy were coming home from one of Dad's customers Chinese New Years parties. (Yah I know, drinking and driving). They were coming up to a corner on the highway beside the river that's now known to get icey, and as usual Dad was"moving" and hit some black ice. Just before that moment a song came on the radio and he said to his buddy with him (Reg), hey Reg, turn it up, I like that song. As Reg reached for the volume knob Dad hit the ice and he told Reg to hang on. Well Reg did, and grabbed the metal bars of the ragtop (60 Impala Vert) and when the car went over three times Reg lost three fingers on his left hand, and my Dad died instantly. Pretty cheerful story eh? That was Jan 31 1968, about 2 weeks after Dads 33rd birthday. I will never forget that day as long as I live and I'm 60 now. That's why the song still chokes me up. ;)

Probably a lot of repeats, but here's some that "get to me"

Blue Bayou - Linda Ronstadt

Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin

Hurt - Johnny Cash

Sad Songs (say so much) - Elton John

Silence and I - Alan Parsons

+1 for Free Bird...my high school best friends favorite song...he died in the same accident that left me paralyzed

Snow Patrol, Chasing Cars... My wife has been ill for too many years. She was bed-ridden for a long time, I would lay for hours with her trying to comfort her.
We weren't sure if she would ever recover.
She heard this song on the radio, said it reminded her of me...…

We danced to that song on my son's wedding day!!!!!

This is a song that reminds me of my nephew that was unfortunately cut down way too early at the young age of 15. :(

This is a song I sent out to my sister (mother of my nephew)

Heard the tail end of that song at the end of a tv show while flipping channels. Terrific song, I went out and bought the cd; my first. Haunting story about that song. IZ starts off with "This ones for Gabby". My daughter had volunteered at a free summer camp for challenged kids She's always on time, but that day she was late. One child hadn't bonded with anyone. Her name was Gabby, she immediately took to my daughter. We had Gabby over to the house a few times over that summer, babysitting so her single mother could have some time to herself. A few weeks before I bought the cd we heard on the evening news that Gabby's mother had killed her as well as her older sister then committed suicide. I can't hear that song without saying a prayer for the three of them,

1. Waterloo Sunset, The Kinks
Disclaimer: Dave Davies is a personal friend. But you have to admit, this is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching songs by one of the most amazing bands EVER. If you are not moved you are a soulless zombie.

2. Prokofiev, Violin Concerto No. 2, Second Movement
Perhaps the saddest, most beautiful slow movement in all of classical music?

3. Modern World, Wolf Parade
OK, OK, another disclaimer: Dan Beockner, Wolf Parade's guitarist and one-half of the WP song writing genius, is a personal friend. But you have to admit, he is a first-rate songsmith, and possesses one of the coolest voices in rock, since...Lou Reed?
