Sonos connect specs

i have a question about using a Sonos Connect for streaming high quality digital files.
First, can you stream 24 bit, 96Khz file through the Sonos, using Tidal or files from your PC?
If you can, does the onboard DAC actually decode from native or does it downsample?
Lastly, do the digital outs provide the full 24 bit 96 KHz digital stream in this case, to send to an outboard DAC, or does it provide something less?

As you found, 16/44.1 is the limit, otherwise just silence from the Sonos. One of several reasons I switched to Bluesound.

Plus the ceiling on how many songs you can have in its metadata base. I got around that by using Plex as the front end.

Yep, that too. And I ran into the limit on file name space long before I ran into the limit on number of tracks. So far so good with Bluesound.

I've looked at some products that use Bluesound, and it looks promising. The Sonos is a very good product for most users (although most are happy with 128 kbps mp3), and it is very stable and reliable. However, for some it just doesn't deliver enough. I'll likely be one of those moving on to something else in the next year or so.

My problem with Sonos is their lack of support of older operating systems. And I don’t mean update support - that would be a given after a certain point, but a total lack of allowing use on an older system. I lost total use on my Windows Vista PC, which is otherwise still very operable. I can still use most software already installed including iTunes, but just can’t upgrade. Not with Sonos. Total shutdown.

Now it seems l’m about to lose use of my iPad 3 as well.

I do have newer iPads and a recent iPhone that I can still use, but I don’t understand their lack of “support” for lack of a better word.

I’ve used my Sonos system for several years and have been very happy with its performance and reliability. Until now. It may be time to look for a new streaming system.
