Sony PS-X7 alignment suggestions

From the sound of it, this table has a slightly shorter than standard arm, and so alignment is a little trickier. I don't have the original alignment jig or overhang gauge or anything else that came with it. I believe I tried either the Baerwald or Loefgren (can't remember now) but still got too much IGD. It's possible that some of that is due to needing to break in the cartridge more, but I wanted to get some informed opinions about the best alignment for this table. It's really quite nice, and I want to get the most out of it.

I threw a 49mm headshell o-ring to stylus distance on the X5 and X7 and they have no IGD. One is a sweet original M91ED with an 80+% stylus and the other is a Denon DL-160 very low hours. I have not has IGD on any cartridge I threw on these tables. Maybe I need to check the alignment with my protractor to see if it is close to Baerwald.

I have the PS-X5 and pictured here are the instructions for the X7 cart mount. All you have to do is make sure the stylus is 49mm away from the point they picture (which I don't know offhand is the o-ring or the back of the headshell casting) and everything else should line up perfectly. I even spent 30something dollars on an alignment jig custom made for my PS-X5 and following the instructions on my manual yielded a spot-on result. I suspect the same will happen for the X7.

and you both mounted the cart perfectly square in the headshell? i will give that 49mm a try tonight.

No its not a problem with any standard alignment. I have mine in a Lofgren B which has the longest overhang of the 3. If you have the headshell that came with the X7, you can do any alignment you want.

Alright, I got it back down to a 49mm overhang. It was around 51-52mm (and turned inward to the spindle). At 49mm, the 2M Red is back up toward the rear of the [original] headshell. I will post again when I get a chance to test it out! Thanks for all the posts so far.

Sony PS-X7 have effective length on 216.5mm and with 200mm pivot to spindle distance and Overhang at 16.5mm its perfect match Stevenson alignment method.

You can use Conrad Hoffman alignment tool and print protractor with these values...
http://www.conradhoffman.com/TemplateGen.zip

Spindle to Pivot Distance: 200mm
Inner Groove radius: 58.975mm
Outer Groove radius: 146.05mm
And print as Stevenson.

When you print protractor you can see results what perfect matched with your turntable. Pivot to spindle is 200mm, Effective length is 216.5mm and Overhang is 16.5mm. These numbers is exactly numbers from manufacturer specifications for Sony PS-X7 TT. You also can to use any alignment method if you want. Manufacturer suggest best alignment methods from their opinions and measurements but decision what alignment method is best are on you.

I'll be damned, 49mm is all it needed. The 2M Red still needs a bit of break-in, but it's really sounding quite nice now. That combo with my Yamaha A-1 running in "Direct" mode is pretty stunning, and that's on a pretty cheap cart so I'm excited. I'm probably going to play around with a used MC next to see where it gets me, before I splurge on something better. Thanks for the assistance, everyone.
