SONY TA-E86 revisited

legal eagle

Sound Hound
I lusted for a SONY TA-E86 for a long long time, 'till I finally got my hands on one at a decent price. At the time I also got the matching amp, from a different seller, who didn't bother to send it after he got paid...to hell with him.

Anyway, the SONY went as planed to my home office, where it got hooked to two amps, a Yamaha MX-830 and a Luxman 5M20. Clearly an overkill I changed today. Got me a TT and the Luxman will be serving it. However, shortly after I got this setup running plans changed, and (fortunately? unfortunately? who knows...) I was not working out of the home office as much, and the TA-E86 was not getting the attention it deserves.

So today, a hot Friday afternoon, no way anything or anybody drags me out of the AC, I got to play with it after a long neglect. I put the Lux aside, and hooked the KEF 103.2 to the MX-830. The TA-E86 has no tone controls so I left the equalizer in. I am no purist.

The result? I forgot how wonderful the TA-E86 is, and forgot how great the MX-830 is. They blend together perfectly. Very precise, very clean. Not a "tube" sound at all for those wondering - it is the other type of sound - with nothing exaggerated nothing missing.

TT coming in a few months to complete the home office setup. Happy camper here.
