Soundesign 6642

Hello,

I have a Soundesign 6642 combo unit with a BSR turntable on top that I'm trying to repair for someone. The idler wheel has a flat spot on it and, of course, I can find nothing useful online about it. ANy thoughts or suggestions?

Very low-end. I would not put much money into it. Soundesign was what I had as a teenager. Junk, really. No offense intended.

Thanks peerson. No offense taken...just trying to fix it for someone and wondered if anyone had a part recommendation.

Grind or sand the idler down until the flat spot is gone. You can do this pressing the idler against the motor pulley, or remove the idler and mount it on a drill and do it faster. Or idlers are easy to buy - try Gary at VOM (that's Voice of Music). BSR had several different mechanisms and a bazillion cosmetic treatments, but on the underneath of the top plate the model number of the turntable is on a label - go on Vinyl Engine and look it, or something similar, if you want a service manual.
Not great tables, but good enough for most people when records were the main source of music. Set up properly, won't damage records and reliable.

I used an emery board to smooth a 60 year old idler that had a divot. Patience, and keep the outer edge square. Did it mounted to table as I didn't want to put the pin it rides on in a drill. Outer diameter doesn't really matter on single edge idlers.

Loudnoises adds details I omited - use sandpaper, emery board (which is what I use), or a file, and keep the tool vertical so the edge remains vertical. If you gently chuck the outside of the idler's oilite bushing in the drill, you won't damage it, or equally, if you lock the idler bushing on a bolt of the same size as the hole and lock it with a nut, you won't damage it.
But with most idlers, doing it in place is easier and fast enough.

Thanks for the great info all! I'll reply back with our course of action once we figure it out. My two teen sons have been repairing some old turntables together and they've really started to enjoy it...kind of becoming a hobby.
