Speaker Match for Pioneer SX-1250

Greetings. I'm new to AK and really enjoy all the educated opinions on this site. I've been getting into vintage audio gear lately and have recently acquired a beautiful Pioneer SX-1250. My current dilemma is to find a vintage appropriate pair of speakers for the receiver.

I have the option to pick up either a pair of Large Advents or a nice pair of JBL L96. Both sound very good for me but unfortunately I can't listen to them side by side with the 1250 driving them (the dilemma) and wonder if any of you have any thoughts or preferences for the best match. I mostly listen to rock, jazz, reggae, and blues on vinyl and CD.

My other stereo setup is a Fisher 1060 paired with 1975 Large Advents, and I do love the sound from the Advents. Would the JBLs be better? They're certainly more rare.

Thanks very much in advance for any thoughts.

Since you already have the Advents, I'd spring for the JBL's. FWIW, I use LA's with my 1250, and love the sound, but it's always nice to have a second choice when the mood strikes.

Thanks. Is $300 for the L96 a decent deal? Recently re-foamed, pots cleaned, new gold connectors in the back, and probably 8/10 for appearance.

I'd go for the JBL's there. Of course with the power of a 1250 you can power most any speaker out there.

Congrat's your off to a great start here....

I'll second the HPM 150s. I have a pair (in my case 1500's) and they match up real well...and real loud.

I'd personally rather have the JBL's over any of the HPM line except maybe the 200 (which i have not heard but am fascinated by). I had HPM 900's which were good and S-1010's that were real good. Still think my L100's are better. Smoother and less harsh IMHO.

Decided to go for the L96. Very happy. Been listening to them for the last couple hours. Amazing, dynamic, full sound. I can definitely foresee the next month being devoted to tweaking the high and mid controls on the speakers along with the 1250's modest equilizer capabilities.

Anyone have any advice on a systematic way to do this. Start at Zero, tweak, tweak, tweak?

My listening room is roughly 15' X 35', speakers along the 15' wall.

Thanks for the replies!

OK, here goes. First attempt......

Ahoy, Tillots, and thanks for asking this question...

While I've been busy with several new toys, one of which is my Onkyo M-504, I also recently obtained an SX-1250. Have them on Infinity RS-625's, quite nice, but was thinking about putting them on my HPM-100's, which, so far, have done nothing but hurt my ears. Thanks for all input.

Tillots,

Good job in putting together a nice looking combo. I'll bet it sounds great. You've got me wondering how the L96 would sound with my old Technics SU-8077.
