Speaker Relay Marantz 2225

20190329_014713.jpg I kept losing sound out of the right channel of my Marantz 2225 receiver.
I thought it is probably a bad speaker relay.
Usually that's what it is in these units.
I had this unit recapped and "tuned up" a couple years ago. And one of the things done was to change the speaker relay. So it was disappointing this thing failed so soon.
I took the cover off and found the relay was butt up against on of the blue output capacitors. So I couldn't get the clear plastic cover off it. I didnt feel like taking the capacitor out or taking apart the whole board to get the relay out, so I cracked and removed the clear plastic relay case, (see pic). Now I was able to get to the relay contacts to clean them. I deoxit cleaned them but still no good. The relay contacts were not closing good on power up. So I stuck a piece of card board on top of the relay contacts wedging them closed all the time now.
Success! Both channels playing 100% now!
Hopefully bypassing the relay protective circuit function will not cause damage.
One more thing. The clear plastic relay case said "China" on it. Yeah, this relatively new relay was made in China. It is part # Omron MY4-02 ?? . More Chinese junk causing heartache here!

+1 on a new relay. Nothing good can happen from bypassing the protection relay. It was most likely active because something is wrong. Despite popular opinion they don’t actually outright fail too often.

Omron makes great relays, I've used 100's and never had a single problem. Nothing wrong with them being made in China.
The relay for sure may have been flawed but the problem also could be the protection circuit acting up. Bypassing it is a terrible idea unless you like fried speakers.

Ok, Im going to take the advuce and get a new relay. Where can I find one? I looked at mousers website but cannot find it.
Any help is appreciated!
Thank you!

Ok, I will replace the relay with a new one. Can you tell me where I can get one!
I checked mousers but cannot find it.

I think Runningdog is correct. MY2-02-DC24 has pin terminals instead of blades with holes in them. If the industrial relay in the Amazon photo is the exact part, it likely isn’t correct and won’t insert through the board. But considering that the part number is correct, it’s possible the picture is a generic and the relay has pins. The mouser part is under $11, so with shipping, around $20. You will have to decide if it’s worth the chance on the Amazon relay.

OK thanks Steve.
I think Im gonna try the Amazon one.
The lead time from mouser is seven weeks.

Mouser has 102 ready to ship immediately. The lead time is seven weeks if someone needs more than that. But the Amazon one May be OK. It will be interesting to see.

I will update hete when it comes.

This is an MY4 and will not fit.

Steve is correct, the picture does not show the correct one. But the part number indicates it is an MY2-02-DC24 so it should fit.
Im gonna order the MY2 from Amazon thinki that the pic is just a generic pic.
But its weird because the relay that was in there was a MY4 and it had pins.
So Im thinking the number 2 or 4 means something else.
Maybe the 4 means four contacts, two per channel? Thats what it had.
Maybe the 2 means only two contacts, one per channel?

MY4 is a 4 pole double throw relay. MY2 is a double pole double throw relay. It would surprise me if the pins on the MY4 would work in a circuit designed for DPDT. Does yours look like it has ever been changed? I don’t have a service manual for the plain 2225, just the 2225L. It’s definition of L703 is MY-2Z-02. 24V. That sounds like a two pole relay to me..:dunno: one way to tell is from the number of pin holes in the pc board. An MY2 has eight pins. An MY4 has fourteen.

I just opened a 2225. The original is an MY2Z-02.

MY2-02 will work also.

What is the difference, you ask? At DigiKey, the MY2Z-02 is listed at $33, and not stocked. The MY2-02 is in stock at about $13. The specs listed on Digikey are identical.
