Speakers with Real Wood Cabinets

High quality plywood (void free varieties of baltic/finnish birch, and marine grade) are significantly stiffer than MDF and therefore, make better enclosures for subwoofers. The strength and durability of ply also makes it a natural for commercial/pro applications where abuse is a way of life.

dave,
ever look into appleply ? it is realtively new, probably has the best characteristics of both baltic birch and marine grade and priced just a bit more tham the baltic. i have been contemplating a build project, when it happens i will go with the appleply. it is availale locally also but the yard i checked with will have to order it.

My mother in law uses that for craft work. It looks nice and has tempted me but not enough to really seek out a source for thicker material.

I've used appleply for a few cabinet projects (furniture, not speakers). It works and takes finishes well, but it's constructed from low density veneers (the manufacturer actually says this on its website and describes it as being good for lightweight panels), and it's definitely lighter in your hands than MDF. I expect it could probably be braced and dampened to the necessary level of sonic deadness if you know what you're doing designing a speaker cabinet, which I definitely do not.

Lightness isn't necessarily a problem, if it's light and stiff it will have a high resonant frequency and make a great subwoofer enclosure material.

hmm,
i guess i was expecting it to be denser then the baltic just due to the # of layers and yhe glue in between. so now i am thrown off a bit but also realize this can be made up with bracing. i was planning on building with ply and most likely just going with a oil finish
