I have a spec 1 that I need to remove the volume knob , I have loosened the 2 allen head screws but the knob will not pull off . any ideas on how to remove this knob without creating any damage. The reason I need to remove it is because there seems to be alot of play at the end of travel of the knob. Thank You in advance for any ideas.

I had that same issue with a SPEC 1.Don't try to force it off. You'll end up breaking the volume control internally.Use a heat gun or hair dryer.I ended up having to chuck the knob up in a mill and ream a couple thousands off just to reinstall.I used a heat gun to remove the knob.

Something to consider is to tap the knob in slightly IF it's being held by setscrew caused ridges. The shafts have resistance towards IN, but not out or at the ends of rotation.

I've had this happen several times and the best way to get it off is, loosen the metric allen scews and turn the knob all the way one direction and when it gets tight, give it another little short turn and then pull it off. What happens is those little allen screws actually put indentations in the shaft the volume knob seats on. You have to get the knob turned off those indentations to be able to pull it off.

I went thru this very same thing with my SPEC-1. The knob would NOT come off. I took some small wedges and ran them towards each other to apply even pressure to the backside while heating it with a blowdryer. After it came off I ended up take a few thousands off the inside also.

Do you know what size allen head this set screw is , I havent had any luck getting the knob to come off , however it seems to have moved , I just dont know if the set screws are backed off far enough, I dont have a metric wrench , if I can find out the size I will buy the right one and then try to use all of the advice you good people have offered.

I'm pretty sure it's a 1.5mm hex wrench (Allen).

Knob off and back on

The spec 1 knob finally came off , and went to put it back on and guess what ? I discovered I dropped the set screws. Now the fun begins ,I'm crawling around on the carpet searching thinking that I would never find them because I now have had the knob in 4 or 5 different locations . So I started my search where the knob came off and fell on the Carpet and after a few minutes of looking I found the first one, put it back into the knob and started my search for the 2nd one no luck on the carpet searched all the other spots where I had the knob still no luck, I'm really bumming now so now my wonderful wife starts in the search and I had to try to explain to her what I was looking for (tough thing to do) after looking for about 15 min I was ready to give up and my wife says "Is this it?" I look and sure enough it was . It must have been on the end of the allen wrench and when I put it down on the speaker to attempt the knob removal it came off the wrench and on top of the speaker was where it was WOW what a chore for just a knob. So Thank all of you for your advice and tricks I used them all to success.

I'm glad you related your story about the set screws. It's a great lesson for anyone restoring electronics.
Before starting any disassembly I always have a plastic dish nearby with a tight fitting lid. All parts go into the container as they are removed and if I'm unable to finish everything in one sitting, the lid goes on in case it gets knocked to the floor.
