Spoon - Transference

Hey All,

I've been listening to the new Spoon album for a few days. Man, I really enjoy this band. Seems that they churn out one good record after another. And it seems like they're always recorded well- the sound stage is always very deep. I usually pull Spoon out when I'm showing people what three dimensional imaging is.

Anyhow, if you're into Spoon, the new CD gets five stars from me. Very good stuff. It's one of those rare albums where you don't find yourself playing a few songs over and over and ignoring the rest. Great songs start to finish.

Take care,

Ed

I'm glad that Spoon's had so much success with the last few albums, even if it makes me a little wistful for the days when you could see them in one of the smaller venues in Austin. Even on _Transference_ (which a lot of people like more or less than the other albums because it wasn't produced by Mike McCarthy) they're still really good at paring down their sound and making things more interesting because of it.

The recent book about their record label, Merge, (_Our Noise_) has a pretty good chapter on Spoon. It covers the familiar bases, like how they were dropped from Elektra, etc, etc, but it's told primarily through interviews with Britt Daniel and Jim Eno.

When the last album came out they played a Private Artist Showcase for my station. We take over a 200 seat club, give away all the tickets, and the bands play in a format that Fran Healy of Travis called "not really unplugged, but sort of half-plugged". Spoon excelled. Fantastic set.

Good to hear Eddie. I haven't gotten around to picking this one up, but your review has bumped it up a little in my to-do list.

A mention of Spoon in another thread reminded me that one of my favorite radio stations, KUT, is broadcasting a live set from Spoon tomorrow night. Thought this would be a more appropriate place to post it. I'm sure you can pick it up over the interwebz if you aren't near Austin.

I just googled Spoon after seeing this cd ,Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
at thrift and was curious so I googled it.

I like it and am gonna go back and grab it and its been discounted so maybe $2.

2 years ago my wife and I got lucky and got tickets to see Spoon at the Scoot Inn. We were about 3 people away from the stage and it was so good.

Their latest album is self recorded, but the run of great sounding albums before that were recorded in John Vanderslice's Tiny Telephone studio in San Francisco. It's a 100% analog environment and everything that comes out of there sounds absolutely gorgeous. Check out the latest John Vanderslice album to see what can do.

I Summon You on Gimme Fiction has the richest acoustic guitar tone I've heard anywhere. I can get lost in that song for half an hour.
