SR620CX question

I mentioned in another thread that I inherited some old marantz equipment from my dad. The receiver has a cx input level and on off button. When turned on barely any sound comes out of the speakers and they crackle. Fine with it off. What was this intended to do? Is it something that could be repaired (keep in mind the sentimental element will have me repair instead of buying a different receiver)?

CX was a noise reduction system that tried to compete with Dolby in the late 70’s early 80’s and lost. You would likely have to find a rare CX encoded vinyl album to use it. There is basically no use for it now, so just keep it in the off position.

I've had the marantz sr 620 cx I bought new in NYC and took a bus to bring it back and it was the last one at the time and got a free computer with it, still have it doing the main caps on it right at the moment, the cx is more of a compressor limiter the way it punches back and forth, as it's on, I love it especially hooked up to a truntable, ✌️
