Stacking speakers...good idea or not ?

Hi all,

I own TWO nice pair of BOSTON ACOUSTIC A-70's. After I have to have ALL the WOOFERS (four Woofers in total) refoamed, I was thinking...it might be fun to STACK the two pairs. My question...is there truly any advantage to STACKING speakers or...might it be a DIS-advantage to do so ? Heck...if I had an addition TWO pair, (four PAIR in total) one sure could create one heck of a WALL of sound but...would that sound be any good? If nothing else, I figure it would ROCK! Your thoughts greatly appreciated.

Hey, Sixcats! Lots of Advents got stacked. bolly was stacking his HPM-100s, even three pair, IIRC, till he got his AR-9s. I got curious, and wanted to try it out. I have no HPMs, but I have 3 pair of EPI 100s. Hooked two pair of 'em up to my Marantz 4300, and started playing. Pretty amazing wall of sound, and better than the sum of its parts. To my old ears, anyway. Don't know why, tho. Only thing is, I live in a duplex, so it's too loud when I really let them stretch their legs. But it is fun, every once in a while.

Never had any Boston's, but lots of people here like 'em. If you get ambitious, try it, and let us know.

Good idea or not?
Depends on on your own why/what.

There are some plusses and minusses of course.

When you stack them, you are essentially creating an new single speaker on each side, and therefore are introducing issues that the designer would not have liked, such as baffle problems, diffraction problems, comb-filtering problems, etc.
Whatever you are after, the original designer would likely have prescribed a different solution, such as higher output/sensitivity drivers, etc.

On the other hand, you tend to gain output, sensitivity, LF impact, dynamic range, etc.

You may find that you like what you gain, more than you like what it degrades.
There are more elegant solutions, but generally it is cheap to try it, and fun.
Nothing wrong with it if you like it, IOW.

I stacked my Original Advents, tweeter to tweeter sort of like a D'Appolito arrangement. The low end is fuller, and everything else is just awesome. A test record I use in the shop is the Telarc Saint Saens Concerto # 3 (the Organ Concerto). Now I can hear the pedal notes from the 32 foot pipes.

As always, you need to get them up off the floor at least 6" to decouple the bass from the floor to keep the lows nice and tight. And try to get the top of the bottom speaker at ear level. Or is it the bottom of the top speaker? :scratch2:

i liked the sound of stacked advents so much i gutted the original cabinets and built new ones! woofer-over-woofer, with the tweeters on top. sounds wonderful. try stacking them, and if you really like the sound, give cabinet making a shot.

Hi all,

Thanks for all you insight! As soon as I get the Woofer re-foamed, I MUST give this a try just for the heck of it! I will most definitly start by finding some type of STAND to get the BOTTOM speakers at LEAST 18" off the floor.
I can't wait to give this a try! I'll report back in the future! THANK YOU all again.

I actually have 3 pairs of speakers stacked - Soundmates on the bottom, L100's middle, and Infinity RS-6000 on top. The stack damn near reaches the ceiline, but I only did this because I wouldn't be able to move around in my room otherwise, but it does sound good.

Yeah, I heard tweeter to tweeter is the way to stack.

I've found that laying each box on it's side, and stacking them with the tweeters as far seperated as possible, gives ya the best sounds. But by all means, experiment, to find what YOU like best. :smoke:

I prefer the sound of my EPI stack, turned the other way, tweeters inboard of the woofers. Mind you, this is fairly nearfield listening, 4' equilateral triangle, one stack at each of two vertices, and me at the third.

Looks like I may get to try. Two 5012 pairs, (a O and a W) but no tweeters. Course I'll have to make it a complicated biamp setup to try and match the high end.

Or just use the 5012s for woofers and insert my 2 pairs of M&K sats inside a D'Appolito: WMMTT-TTMMW.

The sats have switchable impedance, and are about the same efficeincy--so they may not be impossible to match up.

Then I'll have the poor man's Duntechs~!

Hi Sus,

Wow, did you ever have to dig to find this old thread lol. Yikes, over three years old. Things have really change for me Audio wise in three years.
At any rate, I like your "poor man's" Duntechs! LOL.

LOL, I figured I'd mark this thread myself incase it's found in three more years. If so, as for two years my RS-1080 has been in living room. I wonder where it'll be in three more? Maybe in same spot :scratch2:

I wasn't here three years ago. Thank you for this opportunity.

It's AXIOMATIC: Multiple sources playing the same program material WILL interfere with each other in manners complexly variable with listener location and distance.

There are 272 threads about stacking here on AK. Ultimately, I'll get them all.... :p:
