Static Elecricity

Lordy. The static is starting to rot my brain. 3/4 records I have to peel off the cork slip mat. Doesn’t effect playback but I’m just so puzzled as to what the cause may be. Just ran a few record through my audio desk cleaner and the static is worse! Should I lube the turntable more often? Leather vs cork slip mat? Any input is welcome. Thanks

take an ohm reading from your platter (spindle) to table ground. you should have continuity. If not you will need to get continuity. albums are highly charged naturally, they should drain (some) when engaged to the spindle, recharge once pulled from the table.

Yup had this issue a while back. Had to use a ground wire from the bottom of the platter bearing to the table ground which allowed the charge to drain. No more static issues.

I use this with an old-style Discwasher on my troublesome Technics SP-25 for static, to good effect:

They also make an anti-static mat, which I haven't tried, but my 40-year old anti-static mat on my Teac TN-400 Magnefloat still works like a champ. The mat won't be as effective if the spindle/bearing is not grounded, and is most effective with a conductive platter.

It's tough to eliminate the source as it may be coming from multiple causes such as the physical enviornment at the component area (carpet, rugs, etc.), the condition of the air in the room and even from slipping disks in and out of sleeves.

Without really eliminating the sources, the best result I've had is the Thundercon brush (no affil). You use it before you put the LP on the platter. I'd still attack at the source as much as possible, though.
