Story of a sx1250 encounter and a help request

Hi-fi Rookie
Hi everyone,

I am new here, this is my first real post. I already introduced myself in the introductions topic but here is my story : I am 40 years old IT guy from Istanbul, Turkey. I am an old musician, a keyboard player (Yamaha DX7, Roland D-50, Yamaha CS-5) and a blues guitarist. I always listened good music, and searched for the quality of it for years. But after listening music via computer, mp3 player, etc. for years in working of IT business environment, I lost that quality sense and decided to turn back to my roots. That good old analog days. After a detailed search and ask my friends, I decided to start with Pioneer SX series.

After this decision, something strange and great coincidence happened : I encountered with Pioneer sx-1250 near my new office, in a electronics repair shop. I entered the shop and asked if this sx is for sale at the window. The owner said that it is not, and it is not working. My family business is electronics, and my brother has a electronics repair shop, too. So I am familiar with this case : Owner drops the item and does not come back for years when hear the price of the repair. So I asked the owner It is Ok for me to buy it, my brother can repair it. He says, thats ok, the problem is in one channel is not working. I looked at the receiver (it was at the window with full of dust) and noticed that the transistor at the both sides are not the same, four of them are Necs, four of them are Motorola's. So I think myself thats the problem. If I can change the transistors, may be the other channel may work. I asked for the price, he said after 250$ for the repairs, he can sell it to 750$. I said so you ask for 500$ for as is? He said yes. I offered him 200$, and he accepted! I took all the risk, and grab it and carry it to my office! (It was 30 Kg, but afraid him to change his mind).

I came to my office, first cleaned it basically.I powered it and lights were on, even FM receives stereo signals, so the lights were on, power supply was ok.I don't have any speakers at the office. So I opened the case and understand the problem with first sight : There are no amp boards! (AWH-048) both boards were missing.

Pioneer sx-1250 is very rare in here, Istanbul, Turkey. I really want to make it alive. This is my first vintage amp, so I don't want to give up on it.

So, long story short, I need your help. This is not about a receiver, this is about a guy who started a long journey for the listening good music. I will ask, listen and learn, and may be at some point , I will help.

So, is it possible to find these amp boards for sx-1250? I search all the web (ebay, craigslist) but they all sold out and didn't find one. Where can I find these amp boards? I am in Istanbul but I don't think payment and shipment will be a problem. I also have some friends in US (NY, Boston, Miami...) so they can help for shipment, or payment.

Sorry for the post long, I didn't want to be rude and I want to be a real member here, not just ask for a part. As I mentioned before, this is a long journey :)

Thanks.

It was very dirty and dust, spider webs at the transistors grids. After I cleaned it with wet wipes softy, I appeared to be shiny. The fm tuning knob and main volume knob is have main scrathes, the other knobs are good, except power button. I first thought the knob has gone but then find out it has broken. it is broken from the middle, you can turn it on and off, but can't put a knob on it. So I can say it is cosmetically not bad! :)

Here are some photos :

What is your opinion, is it cosmetically good ?

I think he sold them for 250$, that's why he asked for 250$ for repairing :) In Turkey it is not common for asking a price for US dollars :) May be he sold them via ebay. But I will ask him for the boards and rest of the story. Thanks :)

I'd certainly ask about the boards...you bought it assuming it was in a condition that might be repairable. It is not, without the boards. If you strike out there, you most likely will have a long wait to track them down.

Looks good, cosmetically.

The amps have 3 parts:

1. the driver board
2. the heat sink, output transistors and connectors (I see the heat sinks, but the rest?)
3. the steel board that holds the driver board.

Which do you have?

I definitely will, I think he sold them, cause he exactly pronounced the repair price in USD. It is not common here talk in dollars, if you don't know exact price of the units. Monday morning I am at his door :)

1 - I don't have the boards. When I opened the case, I saw some empty sockets, It looked weird to me. I am an IT guy, so I understand somebody removed something, Then I looked for the open top photos of sx-1250 on the Internet, and here in AK, I saw some restoration photos. Then I understand they were both power amp boards.

2 - I have both heats sinks. Weird thing is left side transistors are motorola :

I saw bad soldering at the transistors. If you mean connectors are white plastic sockets, yes I have them too.

3- And yes I have two black protection steel boards in the amp. He removed the boards and put the steel things back in the amp!

I will take some photos of what it looks like without the boards.

And I am sorry for the late replies but you know it is 7 hours late in here, when it is 08 pm in states, it is 03 am here :)

I think what was meant were some internal pics of what might be missing. There's no great lack of cosmetic pictures on SX-1250's on the web. ;)

Noted that your voltage is set to 220V. If you are running 230 or 240V where you are, change the voltage plug.

Ok, I will open it and take clear pictures of it's inside and post them tomorrow morning. But here is the situation :

These boards are missing :

Thanks to this topic I could barely defined them :

And thanks for the warning, We use 220 V here in Turkey.

One source may be some of the auction sellers who have replacements parts and boards listed for sale.

There are several eBay sellers offering SX-1250 parts, although no power amps are listed. It might be worthwhile to contact some of them with an inquiry.

The source you linked may also be worth investigating further. A few emails might reveal something useful.

Thanks, I will send an email for detailed information request. So what do you think about the price? I am asking this question for determining the right board.

Patience is the key in getting the missing boards. Price can vary. And they most certainly will need to be tested before powering them up. Perhaps a rebuild. we talk people through that all the time.

we understand the time differences. No problem. We have people in Japan, Phillipines, South Africa, New Zealand and many other far flung places.

do you know this eBay seller in Turkey? naac.tr (an item of his: 151465832887 )

p.s. I'll have to check my personal stocks of sx-1250 boards, but if we do business (by PM), I can rebuild and test them before shipping them - as long as there are no shipping restrictions to Turkey... (and you could have USA eBay boards stop by me on their way to Turkey)

please post the numbers on the motorola transistors so we can cross reference them. They are probably appropriate. Don't ever take them out without first recording the exact location of each of them.

I send several messages to Ebay sellers but I didn't send a message to naac.tr I will send and ask for the boards.

I will be very happy if you check your personal stocks! It will be great if you can rebuild and test them for me. I don't think there will be a shipment restriction to Turkey. May be some customs problems but I can handle them :)

Tomorrow I will open it took some pictures. May be you can spot some other problems. I didn't like the soldering work on the big transistors.

Here are the numbers on the motorolas :

70483180 W 9331 x2

70473180 W 9316 x2

As far as I can tell:

7047 3180 became MJ15025 pnp to-3 250v 16a 250w 4mhz 15-60hfe
7048 3180 became MJ15024 npn to-3 250v 16a 250w 4mhz 15-60hfe

originals:
2sb600 pnp to-3 200v 10a 200w 4MHZ 20-70hfe
2sd555 npn to-3 200v 10a 200w 7MHZ 20-70hfe
