Well, not exactly your father's street race. The Long Beach Grand Prix ran this past weekend. It is a bonafide street race. They set the course up in the tourist area, just below Downtown Long Beach. The main straight away is on Shoreline drive.

I've lived in Long Beach for more than 20 years and this is the first time I saw the event from the inside. My wife scored a free pass for Saturday and I spent the afternoon at the race.

Saturday was a Celebrity race, qualifying for the main event on Sunday, a drifting competition and the "American Lemans" race. It was pretty cool. I took a bunch of pictures but most of them look like crap. Here's a couple that weren't half bad. These were taken during the qualifying laps.

Nice pictures. I've been to the race many times but not in the past six years. My wedding anniversary is the same weekend every year and one of these days well get down there to celebrate at the race. I would have loved to seen the race when the F1 cars raced there and see Mario Andretti win a race. The expo is usually a lot of fun too. Oh and they call it the Party at the Beach for a good reason. The ultimate would be to see the F1 race in Monaco. :thmbsp:
 
Great pictures there. I used to watch the Detroit Grand Prix with the Formula One cars back in the 80's in downtown Detroit. They changed it Belle Isle and CART instead of Formula One cars. They quit running it altogther now.
 
The Long Beach Grand Prix has changed sanctioning bodies too. It was F1, Cart and is now Champ Car.

CART and Champ Car are basically the same entity. They just changed their name to keep up with Indy Car or IRL. CART stands for Championship Auto Racing Teams, hence Champ Car. The split of CART into the IRL has basically ruined open wheel racing in the US. Since then the big, slow, heavy, moving billboards known as NASCAR have completely taken over. :D

It will be back this year, as I hear it.
 
I was hoping we were going back in the day, my LS6 Chevell at the light
on Van Nuys Blvd (SoCal) with a Charger or something next to me. The
days of my youth, glad I'm still here.
 
I got to see the Phoenix Grand Prix through the streets of downtown the last year before they closed it up due to lack of interest.35,000 people,and they got more than that the same day for the Ostrich races(I kid you not).F1 cars just screaming down the straightaway, sound echoing through the buildings.I think Senna almost lapped the entire field,if I remember right.I had seats right in a corner,and it was amazing.Theres nothing like a good street course.Yeah,someday Ill get to see the Monaco GP.
