Subwoofer - VMPS original or Velodyne HGS-12?

Hi all

I just realized I forgot I have a VMPS subwoofer in the basement stashed away somewhere, and wondering which one I should implement into my system? I have two marginally, functional velodyne, HGS subs, both with amplifier issues.( what a surprise.). I could spend hours trying to get the velodyne‘s back online, or locate the VMPS and drag it upstairs and find out exactly what model it is, I know it’s older, and most likely the original with a 12 inch woofer and 15 inch PR. I have many amplifiers to choose from to drive it, would probably go with my Yamaha P 2500 bridged for 500 W with built-in crossover.

Who here has experienced both of them and which one do you think would have a better sound, blending with Proac tablets or tangent TM-3s etc. my gut instinct says to go with the old VMPS but I will wait for some replies from you wise folks.

cheers

The Jet Propulsion Lab used VMPS subs for vibrational testing for a reason. VMPS subs dig deep.

Also, if your VMPS has a 12" sub with a 15" passive radiator, it's an Original Sub. The 12/12 model was the Smaller, and there was the Larger with 12 and 15" sub drivers, with a 15" passive radiator.

You should check the VMPS over before firing it up, as the surround on the radiator has probably deteriorated. Plus, since the VMPS needs a dedicated amp to drive it, why not use the same amp to test the HGS and Velodyne subs?

Good luck...!

Well crappy pants! I dug out the VMPS from the cobwebs of the basement to find it is the "smaller", and both surrounds are toast. I would like to restore this to original specs so I will now research who makes suitable surrounds, hopefully butyl rubber rubber so I don't have to do this again in 10 years.

Yes, I could certainly try the Velodyne with the Yamaha P2500, I'm sure it will work, it just won't have the accelerometer, which I think contributes to the problems of the Velodyne plate amps. And as I have a pair of Velodynes, I could actually run stereo subs with the Yamaha...mmmmm, more bass, more bass, but is it better bass than the VMPS?

Cheers

Wow, that thing has been in the subterranean depths of a cavern for quite some time. I hope you can find what you need to get it going...!

In the meantime, this VMPS Sub (not mine) should be the same driver. Brian used the larger magnet drivers for bass, and smaller magnet drivers for lower midrange. Also, Brian was using this CSS passive radiator in his final designs. It's said to work quite well. But, you might have to slightly enlarge the mounting hole. That, and remove the base trim panel, to access the radiator.

I had the larger VMPS and liked it so much I bought a second (I was single then :) ). Eventually I got the Velodyne subwoofer electronic controller/EQ which worked great with the VMPS. Good luck getting that one back into action!
