sudden increase in volume...?

Desperado

In the past couple of days, I have noticed a strange occurrence. The volume will jump up to a much higher level for a few seconds, and then jump back down to the normal volume. It doesn't repeat in the same place on another pass. It's only happened on two separate occasions on two records.

What could be causing this? I really don't have any idea what the source is.

A Dirty intermittent connection somewhere that's for sure.

Rotate your volume and tone controls back and forth with no music playing, if you hear a crackling sound, that means they are dirty. Rotate them back and forth over the 'crackly' 'staticy' area until the noise stops.

If could also be the input selector switch; the one that switches between Tape, Phono, Aux, etc....

It could be corroded or dirty connecting cables and contact ranging all the way from the turntable cartridge as Avionic suggest to the wires connecting to the speakers.

It could even be internal to the speaker cabinets, but that is less likely. Eliminate all the other possibilities first.

Might be helpful to know something about your amplification. Do yo use any other sources? Does the problem only occur on records? Might be an amp issue.

While I agree with the previous suggestions, I would also check to see if my stylus was playing with a dusty bunny.

Alright, thanks for the insight, guys. I'll keep watch and try to locate the culprit. I'm running the TT through a Marantz 2220B, so while I'm not a big fan of the radio stations here, I'll try to use the tuner and see if the problem occurs there also. I suppose I could hook up my iPod to the aux input if needed. I have a crappy extra pair of speakers that I could hook up for testing as well. Hope it's not something internal.

Sorry, I made a post and put it in the wrong thread, but didn't see anyway to delete this post.
