Suggestion for new forum on AK " just vintage"

I thought it would be great having a forum focusing on vintage.I guess the big question is whats considered vintage..I was thinking mid 80's back. The reason I make this suggestion for someone like myself who's interest lies it would nice have a place where I could browse all vintage related material without sifting through all the modern info.Yes I can use the search function but the majority of the time I'm just browsing. The established for for Vintage Top Performers is fine for high end but most of us that doesn't apply.
Especially for those new...well old....now reliving HS/college stereo years...it would be great to just read up on acquisitions...pics...anything.I'm sure a lot of you would enjoy this too.
Also as I've only been on this site a short time I appreciate the help/responses to my posts. The biggest thing I see on this forum as compared to others(cycling, skiing etc) is the respect given to every member who posts. So many as I mentioned will at some point esp ones concerning gear(cycling comes to mind) can turn into a flame fest.I have yet to see a hint of this.Keep up the good stuff!

This is largely due to the excellent job the moderation team does.

I bet the moderator who is looking forward to babysitting yet another forum or whole sub set of them, will quickly step up and volunteer for the task when they see this thread. ;) I kid, I kid, it's not likely to happen.

Just my .02 of course...............................

Thanks you for your suggestion. We have over eleven million posts, the vast majority of which deal with vintage gear. In response to requests, and obvious need, over the years, we have subdivided by manufacturers. Still there are a Solid State forum, one for Tube Audio, Turntables, Speakers et al. The Vintage Top Performers, in the System Building section, was created for those few legendary pieces that keep up with the best new gear, and is not intended to be a catch-all for the mass-market gear of yesteryear.

What would you propose we put in a 'Vintage Audio' forum, that doesn't involve re-consolidating all the specific type and maker sub-forums, and creating one giant stew-pot, in which specific interests can no longer be found with relative ease?

What's your vintage and my vintage are two different things for sure. Some would say vintage go=es back to when tubes were king. Others might say the change happened when IC's came along, others might say when the Japanese invaded with their electronics, others when the cassette landed. How about when digital arrived in the early 80's. Any one remember the early introduction of Stereo FM radio? How about color TV.? The 7" 45 rpm record. How about the Stereo LP, or even stereo. I was in the 7th grade when I heard my first stereo in 58. I think I was 5 or 4 when we got our first 45. FM stereo was 63 or 2 when FM stereo was first broadcast by KTSM-FM. The AM Radio station I worked at added FM Stereo in 67 or 68. When did Color TV happen>. Was KRON first in San Francisco in the late 50's. Or was KPIX? Been too long. We lived in Santa Rosa at the time and had a 50 ft mast with a stacked pair of antennae to get Black and white picture. We left in 61. Even then we couldn't get a great picture from the Public TV station.

You're in it. It's called Audiokarma. Vintage as far as the eye can see. Matter of fact, if I had a nickel for every time the word "vintage" appears on this forum/board, I would be a very wealthy man, very very wealthy.

You should pop your head into a "cables" thread (if you can of course, chances are it's been locked due to all the love and respect being thrown around. :D

Seriously though, welcome to AK. It's full of friendly folks, full of knowledge and always willing to lend a helping hand with no strings attached.

I only came in here looking for info on a fix for a turntable. That was about ten years ago and close to 20,000 posts later.

Enjoy!

I think things are good as they are with many mfg's represented as well as solid state, tube, turntables, tape, speaker and tuner. Sure those include vintage and modern but that is easy to sift through.

There can be friction arise between new and vintage fans but these often are from threads that set out to compare the two. Mostly those threads can be avoided if one wishes.

Having one vintage 'super forum' would be the worst because it would take away from well defined and established forums, mucking up the waters. Large all inclusive forums don't parse out specific gear types such as turntables versus amplifiers etc or brands well (unless one wanted to divide AK into vintage and modern separate sites). Audio in an all inclusive forum such as AK is all audio, whether it is new or old is still in the same boat!

Quoted for truth.

Personally I wish we would abolish "Vintage" it's old used equipment and calling it vintage doesn't change any of it.

I'm waiting for all silver face with teak and walnut cabinets to be called Mid Century Audio.

The solid state forum used to be called vintage solid state. The name change did not change the AK experience.

I think there's also references to "new vintage" floating around somewhere.

I think the AK arrangement is very good. It has taught me a whole bunch in areas I might not have any experience in from re-tipping stylus to recapping speakers and electronics. I get exposure to things I never dreamed of, even though I worked selling audio stuff several times when young.

I personally love how things are laid out here. MFG centric forums, and then for general amps/receivers/separates disussions it's divided in : Solid State, and Tube. Brilliant

It's good the way it is. Old timers will remember that Solid State was once Vintage Solid State. There were grumblings from lesser forums about how AK was vintage oriented so it was what it was. Regardless, the fact remains that AK is the number one audio forum.
